Gallery 924 at the Arts Council Seeks Work for TINY III

Gallery 924 is seeking submissions (existing or proposed) from central Indiana artists for the third annual BIG GROUP SHOW: Tiny III. The goal is to feature as many artists as possible offering the widest array of options for holiday shoppers to start a tiny collection of art for themselves or as gifts.

Artists working in all styles and media are welcome  – the only similarity will be size. All work should be “tiny”….or no greater than six inches in any direction. (max. size is 6” x 6” x 6”, there is no minimum size). Tiny should not be confused with a more traditional “miniatures” show. Artists who create miniature works are welcome to submit, but this show is more about the element of surprise, experiment, interaction, and whimsy!  Therefore, site-specific TINY installations are sought as well as multiples such as clay molds or various printmaking techniques. Artists have two options to submit:

1)    Existing Work: Submit up to 10 images. (2D, 3D, installation, etc.)
OR
2)    Create site-specific work!: Come to Gallery 924, choose a location within the gallery and propose a site-specific piece for the show. Your location may be just about anywhere in the gallery – ceiling, floor, walls, brick, windows, etc. Gallery 924 is known for its unique architectural elements (e.g. wood beams, brick walls, large windows, etc.) If the work can be installed without permanently damaging the structure and only take up a 6” x 6” x 6” space, it is acceptable. When you come in to pick your spot, take a photo of the location you want for your piece and send in the photo along with the sketch/design of your proposed piece (bonus points for those Photoshop-savvy artists who can super-impose your sketch onto the gallery photo and really make us see it!) We can’t promise if your piece is selected that you will get the spot you ask for, but we will do our best to make it happen.

The group exhibition will be chosen by an internal selection committee and curated and installed by the Gallery 924 staff. The show will open with a public celebration during the IDADA First Friday Art Tour on Friday, December 5 and remain up until Friday, January 2, 2015.  The gallery will be closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (12/31/14 – 1/1/15).

Work will be selected based on the quality of the work, how well it fits within the larger group show, and the relevance to the theme of the show: Tiny. Work must have been completed within the last three years. If 2D, work must be framed (if appropriate), wired and ready to hang.

All central Indiana artists over the age of 18 are welcome to submit. For these purposes, central Indiana is considered to be Marion and the seven surrounding counties.

Work must be delivered November 30 or December 1 (Sunday or Monday with specific times TBD) and if not sold must be picked up during the week of January 5, 2015. Artists are encouraged to attend the opening, but not required. Artwork will be insured by the gallery for the entirety of the time it is in the gallery.

To submit, please email the following to gallery924@indyarts.org:

  • Up to 10 (ten) images
    • Images should be 72dpi and around 800 pixels in any direction (or of a file size less than 1MB each)
    • Note that files created for national submission sites (CAFÉ, Slideroom, etc.) are acceptable, just please make sure you do not send multiple large files via e-mail as we may not receive them.
    • Note that if you do not receive an e-mail confirming your submission within 2 days excluding weekends, please contact us as we may not have received it.
  • Image list with title, date, medium, dimensions* and price**, (list any special installation requirements on image list as well – e.g. needs electricity, comes with own plinth, etc.)

Deadline: Monday, November 10 at 5pm

NOTE: If you are proposing a site-specific installation and need more time to complete it, you should submit your proposal as quickly as possible. We will do our best to get a final answer to you quickly.

**Please note that Gallery 924 takes a 25% commission on all artwork sold in the gallery; however, artists should keep their prices at a consistent level based upon previous sales, not commission rates. When pricing your work for this particular show, keep in mind that Be Indypendent.org will be promoting the show as a great place to buy unique, indypendent holiday gifts, so a price range at or below $100 would be most appropriate, but certainly not required.

For more information about Gallery 924 or the Arts Council of Indianapolis, please visitwww.indyarts.org/gallery924 . For specific questions, please contact Shannon Linker, Gallery 924 Director at gallery924@indyarts.org.

Gallery 924 at the Arts Council Seeks Work for Summer Group Show

Gallery 924 is seeking entries from central Indiana artists for a Contemporary Landscape Group Show. We are looking to explore the evolution of the traditional Indiana landscape (read Hoosier Group). The work may reference or pay homage to the more traditional landscapes Indiana is known for, but should be a contemporary work that moves far beyond what comes to mind when one thinks of “landscape paintings”.  All media, disciplines, sizes, and styles are welcome. Non-visual artists are encouraged to submit as well; including, but not limited to musicians, writers, dancers, etc.

This group exhibition will be chosen by an internal selection committee and curated and installed by the Gallery 924 staff. The show will open with a public reception during the IDADA First Friday Gallery Tour on Friday, June 6 and close on Friday, June 27, 2014. The gallery will be closed on Friday, July 4, 2014.

Work will be selected based on the quality of the work and the relevance to the theme of the show: contemporary landscapes. Artists working in all styles are encouraged to submit, but work must be original, no Giclée prints or reproductions of any kind will be accepted. Preference will be given to work that was completed within the last three years. If 2D, work must be framed (if appropriate), wired and ready to hang.  There are no size restrictions on artwork. If your large-scale work is accepted into the show, the gallery staff will work with you to find a display solution.

All central Indiana artists over the age of 18 are welcome to submit. For these purposes, central Indiana is considered Marion and the seven surrounding counties.
Work must be delivered Monday, June 2 or Tuesday, June 3 and if not sold must be picked up on July 7 or 8, 2014. Artists are encouraged to attend the opening, but not required. Artwork will be insured by the gallery for the entirety of the time it is in the gallery. Artists will be given a digital marketing tool kit and asked to help promote the show to their patrons.
To submit, please email the following to gallery924@indyarts.org:

  • Up to 5 (five) images
    • Images should be 72dpi and around 800 pixels in any direction (or of a file size less than 1MB each)  Images formatted for Slideroom, CaFE or similar websites are acceptable.
  • Image list with title, date, medium, dimensions* and price**, (list any special installation requirements on image list as well – e.g. needs electricity, comes with own plinth, etc.)

*Please include dimensions of actual display space, meaning including any frames. Also, if your work has a frame that is anything other than a simple black gallery frame, please send a photo of the frame as well.
**Please note that Gallery 924 takes a 25% commission on all artwork sold in the gallery; however, artists should keep their prices at a consistent level based upon previous sales, not commission rates.

All artists submitting for Gallery 924 are encouraged to create or update a current page on the Arts Council’s on-line Artist Database at www.indyarts.org.

******* STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY******

Visual Arts Program in France for Graduating Butler Students and Alumnae

Butler’s Summer Writing Programs in France has arranged for Lynda Barry, the visual artist and graphic novelist, to teach a three-week workshop this summer.  It will cover narrative forms that involve graphic and visual elements and we’re hopeful that past graduates and Butler seniors graduating in May will be interested in joining us.

We’re based in the French Alps, in Chamonix, and you can find out more about us at our website, blogs.butler.edu/Chamonix.  You can also contact me directly (see information below).

It’s a great opportunity and highly affordable, and spring in the Alps is about as much as an artist can hope for in terms of inspiration, so we hope you’ll consider coming.

Troop of 4th and 5th grade students are working on the highest award a Jr. Girl Scout can earn, the Bronze Award.  Their project is to help submit ideas to consider for the development of some high need areas in a community just east of the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The scouts have the option to review some abandon lots in this east side neighborhood.  They will select a lot and propose a structure for the lot (house, business, park), they will draft and essay of their thoughts, and then they will draw a picture to illustrate their plan.  This is where your assistance is needed.  I would like to have an actual illustrator to do a rendering of their idea so that we can bring their plan forward. Basically a Butler student would take the scout’s illustration and idea and give it a professional polish via a rendering. Our troop’s plan is to take their entire presentation to the Mayor’s office ideally or to a neighborhood association.  (See Mix’s email blast of Sept. 22 for details).
