Ryan’s Final Words

This has been a great semester of learning and real life practice for everyone in the Real Business program. There are many different lessons I learned over the course of Real Business Experience. I learned many different things about myself and the business world that will help me be a better businessman and person in my future. This semester started with reading a short story named, Who Moved My Cheese?. This book is a story about dealing with change, and even when things seem good in life, factors that cannot be controlled will change. This is a great lesson to be learned and very important in the business world. When we started our business, Butler Swag Gear, we sent out a survey asking what type of apparel people were interested in buying and which color would be most likely to wear. Our results found that tank tops would be the most wanted type of top for both boys and girls. Also, we found that fifty four percent of people want blue tank tops, while only thirty five percent wanted pink tank tops. However, when we started selling our tank tops, both men and women were much more interested in the pink tank tops. This was a change we adapted to, and our group plans on the pink being our main seller, as opposed to our initial survey results. This is just an example how change can be good because we were able to sell more by knowing our consumer better. A big concept to learn is that not all change is bad, but change will happen and to be successful it is necessary to adapt to the situation. When choosing our business ideas, many different ideas were debated on until five ideas in our class were chosen, and one idea being expanded to two separate ideas. When choosing ideas, we broke each one down, debating their strengths, weakness, opportunities on campus and in the Indianapolis area, and threats in the local area.

I always looked forward to going to this class, even in the beginning phases when it was mainly lecture.  Between the readings and the class time with both Professor Halstead and the mentors, I learned a lot of core information about business that I will carry with me into the rest of my life.  I always knew that what we were doing in class had an underlying purpose for, not only the future of the class, but my future business endeavors.
