The Butler Bulldogs and the Vanderbilt University Commodores squared off at Varsity Field on Sunday afternoon.
The match was slated to begin at noon, but was pushed back over three hours due to the snow on the field. Players, coaches, staff and parents helped clear the snow. Even in March, Varsity Field morphed into a winter wonderland.
The Commodores won the Big East tilt by a score of 17-8. Vanderbilt took a 10-2 lead into the half, but Butler scored six goals in the second half to tighten the gap.
Sophomore midfielder Christina Soderquist scored a team-high four goals on the day, as she increased her total to 14 on the season. Freshman attacker Morgan Paige added two goals on four shots, while freshman midfielder Elizabeth Davide and redshirt junior midfielder Haley Hallenbeck added goal apiece.
“Once we were able to take the game into our hands and set the tempo, we were able to begin to score,” Soderquist said. “During half, we all agreed to reset and come out strong in the second half, which is what we did.”
The Bulldogs made nine team saves and earned 14 draw controls in the match.
Butler fell to 1-9 on the season after the loss. They will travel to Denver to face another Big East foe on Saturday. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. EST.
