{"id":163,"date":"2020-10-08T23:33:52","date_gmt":"2020-10-09T03:33:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butlerbridgeprogram\/?page_id=163"},"modified":"2020-10-08T23:33:52","modified_gmt":"2020-10-09T03:33:52","slug":"max-habel-i-was-blind","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butlerbridgeprogram\/max-habel-i-was-blind\/","title":{"rendered":"Max Habel, &#8220;I Was Blind&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>I was blind.<br \/>\nI couldn\u2019t see through the hazy fog,<br \/>\nwhich was my privilege and luck,<\/p>\n<p>Blind.<br \/>\nto the ways of the world which inhabit<br \/>\nthe lives of our brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n<p>It was as if,<br \/>\nI was in a cave,<br \/>\nand there was a light at one end,<br \/>\nand I simply could not turn around,<br \/>\nto face it head-on.<\/p>\n<p>It was not,<br \/>\nthat I chose not to know,<br \/>\nnor not to look,<br \/>\nbecause I truly<br \/>\ndidn\u2019t know where to look.<\/p>\n<p>And so I was blind.<br \/>\nBlind to the discrimination,<br \/>\nthat lives in this country,<br \/>\nthat survives on this planet.<\/p>\n<p>the Hate<br \/>\nthat thrives.<\/p>\n<p>I was blind,<br \/>\ndeaf,<br \/>\nsenseless,<br \/>\nstupid.<br \/>\nit was as if I had<br \/>\ncurled up into my little shell,<br \/>\nstuck my head in the sand,<br \/>\nand chose not to look Elsewhere,<br \/>\nuntil Elsewhere came to me.<\/p>\n<p>And come it did.<\/p>\n<p>And I pulled my gritty head<br \/>\nout of that sand,<br \/>\nexpecting a beach,<br \/>\nbut observing a desert.<br \/>\nexpecting a dream,<br \/>\nbut receiving reality.<\/p>\n<p>And Elsewhere walked up to me,<br \/>\nand slapped me in the face.<br \/>\nand suddenly,<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>I could See.<\/p>\n<p>I could See the injustice,<br \/>\nthe hate,<br \/>\nthe discrimination.<br \/>\nthe racism,<\/p>\n<p>Thank you,<br \/>\nGeorge Floyd,<br \/>\nfor slapping me in the face.<\/p>\n<p>And let his three words,<br \/>\ninspire Justice,<br \/>\nHumanity,<br \/>\nand Kindness,<br \/>\nthrough all of us.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was blind.
