For my professional or career development, I feel that the greatest lesson learned is how to interact with those who I try to business with.  The professional lesson I learned in a way goes along with the maturity growth I feel that I have achieved.  As I have learned to make friends with the group I worked with and as I spoke to more and more adults, I feel that professionally this has helped me with one-on-one interaction with people.  As technology takes over present day, I feel that gaining an understanding in how to interact with people face-to-face will lead me to do great things no matter what company I end up working in.

The whole aspect of creating a business and doing a trail run improved my professionalism.  Our company, Canal Coupons, was a service and we had to deal with real businesses and try to sell our idea to them.  Going to Broad Ripple and talking to actual businesses like Hot Box really made me understand how important certain professional things are when working with other companies.  We wanted the businesses to see past us being just students and see us as professional businessmen, and we were able to accomplish that by meeting with them, answering any tough questions they had, and even taking advice they had so we could grow as a business.   Creating and running our business overall helped me grow as a person and a businesswoman.

Overall, this course was an excellent experience in developing skills and understanding business operations.  I enjoyed the opportunity to make decisions that each had a real-world impact.  In hindsight, there were times throughout the semester that our team was not able to reach a desired goal.  However, in this class, it was often stated that the process was less important than the process used to achieve the outcome.   I agree with this statement because the lessons that I learned about risks and teamwork were based on taking risks, accepting responsibility, and learning from success and failure, not on the number of sales that our group achieved.

When coming to Butler for campus tours there was a lot of talk on campus about how Butler truly prepares students for the future with its various programs.  When hearing this, I thought it was just a required sales pitch in order to attract more students to Butler.  After experiencing FBE and especially the RBE program, I realize that Butler was not joking about the value of their RBE program.   RBE combines class room discussions, topic related business readings, case studies, presentations, team work, and most importantly preparing and operating an actual business.  It is hard to believe that all these aspects were combined in one three credit hour course.  Because of the combinations of the different styles of learning, the RBE class truly prepares one for the real world.   In conclusion, I enjoyed working with my team and mentor during the semester.  The class was a lot of work and stressful at many times, but the rewards and skills I will carry with me the rest of my life are extensive.  The RBE program has taught and provided me with a great variety of real life experiences.

In just my second year at Butler, the College of Business has provided for me a real experience in the business world.  The Real Business Experience program is a unique course that not only teaches the skills needed to become an entrepreneur, but it empowers all students to apply the qualities and skills needed in the professional world by enabling them to start their own business.  Students become familiar with all basic aspects of business including marketing, accounting, and finance, as well as improving their skills in communication, professionalism, working with a team, and leadership. Designed to build entrepreneurs, RBE challenges students to be well-rounded individuals and prepares them for the real world of business.
