Dawgs Rally Late to Overcome a Tough Bradley Squad!

On Saturday, November 9th, Parents’ Weekend kicked off with festivities all over campus! While parents and students gathered in the Hinkle parking lot to tailgate, the Butler Club Basketball Team faced off against a very experienced Bradley University squad. The Dawgs battled through the first half to find themselves with a  half time lead of 43-36. Matt Troja, a senior and captain for the Butler team, kicked off the second half with back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead to 13. Although the Bradley squad answered with a few three’s of their own, Butler rallied at the 12-minute mark to find 3 steals and 12 fast-break points from the freshman duo, Trey Pettus and Bernard McFarland.

With 11 mintues left in the second half, Butler turned to their inside presence with Jim Herrick and Lavell Dean. While Bradley chained several quick opportunities, Herrick and Dean combined for 14 points in a 4-minute span to increase the Dawgs lead to 15.  Bradley responded in turn with several three-pointers in the closing minutes, but another round of fast-break points and mid-range jumpshots by Nick Donati kept the Butler team well ahead of Bradley as the game closed and Butler held on to an impressive 88-77 final score.

The Dawgs are now 5-1 on the year and will announce their next games in the coming weeks. We would also like to add a special thanks to all the families and friends that watched our game against Bradley! Stay tuned for more updates!

Butler Wins IU Club Basketball Tournament 2013

The Butler Men’s Club Basketball team improved its season record to 21-1 with an impressive championship in Bloomington, IN.  The team travelled down to the Indiana University campus on February 2nd and 3rd and came out with a 7-0 record.  In pool play the Bulldogs beat Lewis College, Ohio State University and Indiana University.  Butler opened bracket play with a victory over Dayton 2.  This led to a matchup with Ivy Tech-Lafayette, a team Butler has struggled with in the past.  After losing four times to Ivy Tech last season, Carl Miller helped BU to a convincing victory, setting up a semifinal matchup with Dayton 1, which Butler won running away.  In the championship, Butler faced another familiar foe in Central Michigan University.  Thanks to the post play of Matt Vogt and James Pascascio, the Bulldogs were able to come out champions of their third tournament this season.

Butler will face Ivy Tech University-Lafayette this Saturday, February 9th at the HRC.

Butler Wins Home Tournament!

The Butler Men’s Club basketball team won the second annual Butler Fall Invitational last Saturday, November 10th.  The tournament included squads from Ivy Tech-Lafayette, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and two teams from Indiana University.  The Bulldogs started off the day by winning pool play games against Indiana 1 and Ivy Tech.  Thanks to hot shooting by Louie Kamo, Butler was able to secure the number two seed entering bracket play.  This set up a semifinal match-up against Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.  The tone for the game was set early with the pressuring defense of Will Davis, Justin Miller, and Brennan Walker.  This allowed the Bulldogs to jump to a quick lead and never look back.  In the championship, Butler once again faced a resilient Indiana 1 team. A balanced attack of inside and out scoring helped the Bulldogs pull away in the second half en route to the first tournament win in the programs short, two year, history.

Butler Men’s Club Basketball Takes 2nd Place at SIU-Edwardsville

The Butler Men’s Club Basketball team ended a strong weekend with a second place finish in the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville tournament.  On Saturday, October 20th the team won all three of its pool play games.  First defeating Miami (OH) by forfeit then pulling out a hard nosed contest against Truman College.  Butler faced a 15 point deficit before making a second half surge and winning with a put back by Grant Rodgers in the final seconds.  Next, the Bulldogs beat Indiana University’s B team, leading by as much as 25 in the contest.

On Sunday, Butler earned a first round bye, and the second overall seed, because of their 3-0 finish in pool play.  In the first single elimination match up the Bulldogs faced the Indiana University A team.  Butler won the contest by generating a sizable lead from the tip, thanks to the hot shooting of Alex Prittie, and never relinquished it.  Next was Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, the reigning national champions.  This hard fought contest finished with Butler winning by 20, setting up a meeting in the championship with the University of Missouri.  In the “ship” the Bulldogs jumped out to 10 point lead, but were unable to hold on late.  The runner-up finish is Butler’s second in the past year in major tournaments.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a home tournament on Saturday, November 10th.  The tournament will be played at the HRC between the Bulldogs, Indiana University 1, Indiana University 2, SIU-Carbondale, SIU-Edwardsville, and Ivy Tech-Lafayette.
