I think the number of patients that don\u2019t have the resources they may have once had is definitely increasing as the economy struggles.\u201d<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Health centers offer some of the same services that hospitals do, but they stress primary care and offer more options for uninsured patients.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Emily Twichell, a physician\u2019s assistant at the health center, said primary care is important because it gives someone his or her basic health care maintenance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThey [people] are very grateful just to have a place to go for primary care that is available, easily accessible, and affordable,\u201d Twichell said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The health center does wellness checks, well-child checks, and physical exams. The center treats people who are ill, as well as people with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The center charges patients fees based on their annual income.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want people not to come because they feel like they can\u2019t pay,\u201d Donnelly said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Indiana Department of Health, nine out of 10 community health center patients are 200 percent below the poverty level and are uninsured.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Donnelly said about 80 percent of the patients seen at the clinic have been uninsured.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCertainly from a cost perspective with health care, it\u2019s better for them [patients] to come to a clinic like this than an emergency room,\u201d Donnelly said. \u201cIt\u2019s certainly better to do that and use the emergency room for truly serious health matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Hospitals discourage use of emergency rooms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Emergency rooms get their fair share of business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOver 100,000 patients come through our emergency room every year,\u201d Collette DuValle of Wishard Health Services said. \u201cSo, right now we\u2019re trying to stress that people should see physicians at our clinics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Coalition fights for health care<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"vertical-align: bottom; border: 1px solid;\" src=\"http:\/\/t2.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:O9RCUMrvSVn7MM:http:\/\/www.hlmhc.org\/images\/imhc%2520logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"131\" \/>Carl Ellison, vice president and chief operating officer of the Indiana Minority Health Coalition, agrees that clinics provide a lot of help to individuals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWithout sliding fees based on one\u2019s income, a lot of people will wind up in the emergency rooms, which are not a very effective or efficient vehicle for receiving care,\u201d Ellison said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Indiana Department of Health, Indiana has saved $473 million because of care given by clinics instead of hospitals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCommunity health centers are a safety net,\u201d Ellison said. \u201cThey\u2019re the next to the last resort for the poor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Indiana Minority Health Coalition not only tries to address the problem of patients not having insurance, they also try to help minorities receive equal health care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAs an advocacy organization, the only way to eliminate health disparities is to make sure everyone has the same access to common care,\u201d Ellison said. \u201cUniversal health care is just a fundamental, societal commitment we have to achieve &#8230; We can reduce disparities if everyone can see the doctor without really worrying about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ellison said society\u2019s objective should be to reach a point where everyone\u2019s cup is full, meaning that everyone has a 10 out of 10 chance of receiving health insurance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe need to be a society where the uninsured rate is zero,\u201d Ellison said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Barack Obama is currently working with Congress on a health care reform bill to move the United States in the direction towards universal health care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a fascinating area,\u201d Ellison said. \u201cOnly in America can the richest society have a conversation that goes on about its poorest citizens not getting what they need to achieve greater health.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/issues\/healthcare\/index.php\">The Obama Plan<\/a><\/h2>\n<span class=\"vvqbox vvqyoutube\" style=\"width:425px;height:344px;\"><span id=\"vvq-585-youtube-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hUNCpnRBf9o\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/hUNCpnRBf9o\/0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Preview Image\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Polls<\/h2>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.snappoll.com\/poll\/318802.php\">Are you uninsured?<\/a><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.snappoll.com\/poll\/318803.php\">Which do you prefer?
