{"id":3159,"date":"2015-02-05T09:57:59","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T14:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/?p=3159"},"modified":"2015-03-01T11:19:30","modified_gmt":"2015-03-01T16:19:30","slug":"founders-week-catharine-merrill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/2015\/02\/founders-week-catharine-merrill\/","title":{"rendered":"Founder&#8217;s Week &#8211; Catharine Merrill"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Founder&#8217;s Week &#8211; Catharine Merrill<\/h2>\n<p>Yesterday we told you about the <a title=\"University Founder Ovid Butler\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/2015\/02\/university-founder-ovid-butler\/\">Ovid Butler<\/a>&#8216;s daughter <a title=\"University Founder Demia Butler &amp; The University\u2019s Abolitionist-Feminist Beginnings\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/2015\/02\/university-founder-demia-butler-the-universitys-abolitionist-feminist-beginnings\/\">Demia<\/a>, for whom the Demia Butler Chair of English Literature is named. Today we&#8217;d like to tell you about the first holder of that chair, Catharine Merrill (1824-1900). Merrill came from a prominent Indiana family, served as a volunteer nurse during the Civil War, was friends with conservationist John Muir, and was an innovator in the classroom, being the first to use the lecture method for courses other than science. \u00a0Remembered as providing a model in scholarship and character, she retired from Butler in 1883, but continued teaching privately until shortly before her death.
