A HUG FROM A FRIEND

As I type these words,
My smartphone calls me a dumbass,
My cries have risen from felonies past.
I look to you and I’m bombarded with memories.
I’m reminded
Not only of the bad times
But of the ones that bring sweet falsettos and angelic harmonies.
I steal a glance now and then,
Catch you catching my eyes,
Reading the words spilling from my pen.
This isn’t the way things were meant to be.
I know they say everything happens for a reason,
And for every season there’s an end.
But couldn’t we forget the past
And pretend for a second that there was something more to this
Than a neighborly smile,
A hug from a friend.
