  • PROWLER

    by KYLA

    Stalking through the forest trees.
The wolf’s red eyes glowing in the darkness.
    It sneaks upon its prey.

Crouching real low to move through the grass
    like a snake.

    Breaking the silence it growls.
    Then attacks its prey swiftly.
With the smell of blood in the wolf’s nose
It howls to the great full moon.

    Prowling into the night,
leaving not a trace of him in sight.

Stalking off to his lair in the high
    mountains, beyond the gloomy caves.

The wolf’s howl calls to the pack.
Four growling and barking wolves come
    from the pitch black forest.

    Racing to the high mountain,
The wolves disappear into the eerie night.

  • PIGEON

    by KYLA

    Flying through the crisp air,
Then landing gently on the ground.

Bobbing its head back and forth,
It dances to the rhythm of the car’s beeps.

    Pecking the ground, then spreading
    its wings to fly.

The pigeon is charmed by the bell
    that rings from the church.

The pigeon glides above the cars
like Icarus, not too low and not too high.

The pigeon floats in the light breeze,
catching the clouds in it’s wings.

The pigeon glides to the ground
    and pecks.

    It finds a graceful grain
    of rice upon the sidewalk.

    The pigeon gulps the rice,
    Its stomach expands.

    Then BOOM! It explodes
    into smoke and grey
    feathers.

I sit on the bench nearby,
    drinking my cup of Coca Cola;
Then suddenly, I explode into laughter.

Like the pigeon explodes when it eats the
    rice.

As I can disappear in an instant, the
    pigeon can disappear into smoke.

  • DOOR

    by SHERROD

    1
Opening the pathway to a new world
Fighting against the force that pushes it closed

    2
Allowing new faces to pass through
Letting a new body pass its presence

    3
    A handle called a knob
A flashing brown coating of paint
An opening at the bottom to let air in
Allowing the bodies to breathe the freshness of the outside

    4
A pathway to a new world
    A new destiny
Adding suspense to what comes next

    5
One, two, or maybe three forms of entry
After every stop, pass the doorway
    A new light shines

    6
A place to fly you away
    A building for education
A guard to block the innocents

    7
Flying out past the world around you
    Teaching children about new things
Pushing away from a greater power

    8
Let the door lead you to another world
A new world that has no way out

    9
    The door can be devious
    The door can be kind

    10
Allowing you to go to new places
    Letting you waste its time

    11
The door has shades of red, brown, and green
With a little crease in between

    12
A new opening to another life
A door has its own beautiful light

    13
    Let the door guide you
Let the door consume your body
Pass the door and go on an adventure
A new life from an old door

  • GOODBYE, MARCUS

    by SHERROD

You are my cousin and I love you
    Like a brother
You and I went our separate ways. But
I can tell you are still with me.
Chicago, our hometown, and now your
    Territory.
I don’t know what you think about
All the time because we think so much
    Alike
    So alike that it’s scary.
I miss you with a fiery passion
And I hope you miss me the same
    Way.
I love you bro and that’s never gonna
    Change.
I know you love me too, but you suck
    At showing your emotions
I wish to see you again or to live
    With you again
You are my one and only true friend.

  • ANTENNAE

    by SHERROD

Rushing cars flying through the streets
Wind flowing making the leaves fall
The wind blows and makes an antenna turn
The character Qiú falls and lands on a tree
It leans and reveals a rustling flag
A flag that shows that we are all free
    White stars and red bars
The flag blooms with each gust of air
To show that I can still flow with care
