A lot of times
\npeople don’t look at the
\nchildren swinging at the park
\nor if they do, they figure
\nkids are doing just that;
\nbeing kids, swinging at a park.
\nThey stroll by and hear the
\nsqueals of excitement when one kid
\njumps off
\nand lands catlike
\nand the rest “ooh” and “ahh”
\nat him in adoration
\nthen they keep walking
\nnearing their destination in mind.
\nNo one cares why
\nthe kids are there
\nrather than at home on this
\ncold October evening
\nwhy dusk is creeping in and
\nthe young ones are laughing
\nlike they have all the time in
\nthe world.
\nWhat if they have nothing else
\nto cling to but the
\nrusted steel links that discolor
\ntheir sweaty palms?
\nBecause three blocks away
\ntheir mattress and sheet are
\nthe only things in the house
\nthat hug them.
\nAnd when their dad snorts
\nRitalin
\nand their mom ran out
\ntwo years ago
\nwho wouldn’t want to sleep in
\nthe slide tunnel?<\/p>\n

Because no one notices
\nthey’re never there
\nand you don’t think anything
\nof seeing them
\nswinging
