\nI was in a middle class,
\nthe shortest of the lot…<\/p>\n

\nWhen everything was maybe not simple,
\nbut it all made sense?
\nBack when R-E-S-P-E-C-T wasn’t just a song.<\/p>\n

Do you remember?
\nSitting in a circle and making beats together,
\nback when we were all friends AND family?
\nWhen music is a way of life?<\/p>\n

Do you remember?
\nMe?
\nA sweet little girl, not even 13?
\nA hyper tiny dreamer and her dingy alto sax?<\/p>\n

Do you remember?
\nThe music we played,
\nand the songs we sang,
\ndancing around our heads like Apaches?<\/p>\n

I…
\nI am remembering…
\nA time where dreams became reality,
\nbecause we made it so.<\/p>\n

I am remembering
\na time when that dingy alto sax
\nwas equal to a bit of cash
\non the street corner, if you played well enough.<\/p>\n

I am remembering
\na time when there was no such thing as being “fake,”
\nbecause labels didn’t matter
\nunless it was your name.<\/p>\n

\nI don’t want to remember…
\nWas I a fist-fighter?
\nA rebel?<\/p>\n

I don’t want to remember…
\nI was younger,
\nmy dad was abusive,
\nour tears filled that fire’s hunger…<\/p>\n

I don’t want to remember,
\nhow even when I was bad,
\nI was good,
\na vigilante for the weak.<\/p>\n

You see,
\nit’s these,
\nthese memories,
\nghosts of the past that make us who we are.
\nWe learn, live, and grow.
\nThat was yesterday,
\nbut what about
