With it, Islamic literature spread and developed. It is a frame story, in which the wife, Scheherezade, of the ruler Jahshiyari, tells a different story every night for 1001 nights. Modern Islamic Literature<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">When the Europeans conquered (and subsequently divided) the Arab nations, they brought with them all kinds of new literature. The Sykes-Picot agreement in the early 20th century divided the region into 4 &#8220;zones&#8221; controlled by different countries.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1501\" style=\"width: 292px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/ghsislam13\/files\/2013\/11\/sykes1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1501\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1501 \" alt=\"Sykes-Picot 1916by Trey Menefee, used under \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/ghsislam13\/files\/2013\/11\/sykes1-282x300.gif\" width=\"282\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1501\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sykes-Picot 1916<br \/>by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/trey333\/206614348\/in\/photostream\/\">Trey Menefee<\/a>, used under <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/3.0\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i.creativecommons.org\/l\/by-nc\/3.0\/80x15.png\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The dominance of the European nations meant the\u00a0qa\u1e63\u012bdah, maq\u0101mah, and other genres refined in the premodern period gave way to the play, the novel, the short story, and free verse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the Sykes-Picot agreement, there was an underground translation movement, which translated European, Asian, and American novels, poems, and periodicals to Arabic.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Zaynab<\/span> by Muhammed Husayn Haykal is considered by many to be the first Arabic novel.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Zaynab<\/span>\u00a0was published in 1913 and originally was intended to be a short story. Instead, it ended up becoming a full length, three-part novel. This work was the first, and most notable example of the rising short story movement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Type of writing was not the only thing to change from the European influence. Instead of focusing solely on religious teachings and beliefs, some authors took to writing as a way to criticize social, economic, or political issues. The first example of this was actually a set of\u00a0<em>maqamat<\/em> written in the late 17th century. This set of poems, were originally written with religious context, were now used as a template to criticize social issues in Egypt and throughout the arabic world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>References:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cornell, U.
