Most cases of melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. To lower your skin cancer risk, protect your skin from the sun and avoid indoor tanning.<\/p>\n<h2>Sun Safety Tips<\/h2>\n<p>Check the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s <a id=\"anch_247\" title=\"Link to External Web Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.epa.gov\/sunwise\/uv-index\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">UV Index<\/a><a id=\"anch_248\" class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/Other\/disclaimer.html\"><\/a> before you spend time outdoors and plan your sun protection accordingly, using these tips\u2014<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seek shade, especially during midday hours.<\/li>\n<li>Cover up with clothing to protect exposed skin.<\/li>\n<li>Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears, and neck.<\/li>\n<li>Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Use sunscreen with broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection and sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher.<\/li>\n<li>Remember to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Fast Facts About Skin Cancer<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>When you\u2019re having fun outdoors, it\u2019s easy to forget how important it is to <a id=\"anch_249\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/skin\/basic_info\/sun-safety.htm\" class=\"broken_link\">protect yourself from the sun.<\/a> Unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun\u2019s UV rays in as little as 15 minutes. Yet it can take as long as 12 hours for skin to show the full effect of sun exposure.<\/li>\n<li>Even if it\u2019s cool and cloudy, you still need protection.
