{"id":5317,"date":"2016-04-28T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/healthyhorizons\/?p=5317"},"modified":"2016-04-22T15:17:55","modified_gmt":"2016-04-22T19:17:55","slug":"exercise-outside-the-box","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/healthyhorizons\/uncategorized\/exercise-outside-the-box\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise Outside the Box"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Different Ways to Think about &#8220;Exercise&#8221; Options:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Hiking, especially with friends \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Every found yourself on a walk with a friend or sweetheart and the time has just passed, along with the steps?\u00a0 Conversation flows and memories are made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Walking \u2013 \u00a0<\/strong>No time to hike? \u00a0Go for a walk. \u00a0Even a 15-minute brisk walk is enough time to get close to a mile walked.\u00a0Do you have a 30-minute meeting at work? \u00a0Have a walking meeting instead. \u00a0Steve Jobs was known for doing this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>LARPING \u2013 \u00a0<\/strong>Live Action Role Playing. \u00a0Might seem silly to those on the outside, but to those playing, it\u2019s an amazing adventure that reminds us how awesome our imaginations are. \u00a0Also, depending on the game, you could be wearing a heavy costume, swinging heavy weaponry, and running for your life!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Rock Climbing \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s one of the best arm\/back\/forearm workouts in existence, you get to feel like a hero\u00a0when you reach the top of the wall, and all climbing routes are graded so you can level up the challenge as you get stronger\/fitter\/better. \u00a0It\u2019s a fit nerd\u2019s dream!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\" title=\"Geocaching\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geocaching\" target=\"_blank\">Geocaching<\/a>\u00a0\u2013<\/strong>\u00a0If rock climbing is a fit-nerd\u2019s dream, then geocaching is a adventure nerd\u2019s dream brought to life. \u00a0Become a real life treasure-hunter (Lara Croft? Nathan Drake? You decide!), and get a great workout in while you\u2019re at it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Dancing \u2013 \u00a0<\/strong>Ever tried serious swing dancing? You\u2019ll be sweating within ten minutes. \u00a0How about hip hop? \u00a0Drenched in sweat, and sore as hell the next day. Zumba? Tango? Flamenco? \u00a0You\u2019d be surprised what you can sign up for and what will elevate your heart rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Roughhousing with your kids.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t forget\u00a0what it&#8217;s like to be a kid\u2013 it keeps you young. Teach them to roll down hills, pull a sled up a hill in the winter-time for the exhilarating time racing downhill or\u00a0have a contest blowing up balloons!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Climbing on stuff<\/strong> \u2013 &#8220;Stuff&#8221; can even be the\u00a0slides at the park (see above).\u00a0 I also enjoyed the walk up the Monument Circle structure downtown Indianapolis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Martial arts \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Whether it\u2019s Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, Karate or Capoeira, there\u2019s a martial art out there that will make you feel like impressed with yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Build a standing desk<\/strong> \u2013 Although we all know that\u00a0correlation does not prove causation, it\u2019s no surprise that there\u2019s a strong correlation between sitting all day and an early grave. \u00a0Why not fix your posture, strengthen your legs, and spend the day being more productive with a standing desk?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Stop meeting for coffee \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0If somebody wants to meet up with you for coffee, suggest something active: throwing a baseball, tossing a frisbee, going for a hike \u2013 anything that gets you up and moving. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Clean \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Ugh, nobody likes to clean the house\/apartment. I certainly don\u2019t. So I make a game out of it. \u00a0I see how much I can accomplish with a single song blasting at max volume. \u00a0Of course, after getting through one song, I figure \u201cwelp, I\u2019ve already started, might as well keep going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Do handstands \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0This is a fun activity that builds up serious arm and core strength and will leave you sweating bullets after even a few minutes. \u00a0Find a park, go do handstands, cartwheels, somersaults, and whatever else makes you feel young again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Parkour \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t care how old you are, there\u2019s no reason you can\u2019t get started with rolling around in your hard and vaulting over picnic tables and bike racks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Playout \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Is Parkour too serious for you?\u00a0\u00a0 Try a Playout. \u00a0Spiderman was on to something \u2013 climbing walls, swinging from skyscrapers, and popping flips around the bad guys. You might not be able to swing between buildings, but you can definitely visit a playground in your area and get creative!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Adult gymnastics \u2013 <\/strong>In the same vein as Parkour, gymnastics will help you build some of the BEST real world strength you can get with any type of exercise, and it\u2019s all done in a playful way without a single weight being picked up. \u00a0Swing from rings, somersault, flip onto pads, and more. \u00a0There are gyms all over the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Yoga\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Build flexibility, strength, and learn to freaking relax. \u00a0There are million kinds of yoga, so sign up for a few different kinds and see which one lines up the best with what you\u2019re looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Play video games that make you be active \u2013<\/strong> Wii Tennis, Wii Fit, Just Dance on Xbox Kinect, and whatever games actually exist for the Sony Move (does anybody actually have this?). \u00a0OK, DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) counts too. \u00a0I know an hour of that is exhausting. \u00a0Playing a normal game? \u00a0Make a rule that you can only play while standing up. \u00a0That\u2019s what I do to keep myself from spending twelve hours on the couch in marathon gaming sessions!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Play on a playground \u2013 <\/strong>Go down the slide, swing across the monkey bars, climb the rope all, balance on the balance beam. \u00a0Create an obstacle course for yourself and see how quickly you can get through it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Play a musical instrument \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Did you know playing the violin for an hour burns about as many calories was walking around a normal track for an hour? \u00a0It turns out, our brains can burn boatloads of calories too. So challenge your brain!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Join a Rec league \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>New in town? Want to be active and meet people? \u00a0Join a kickball or softball league. \u00a0You get to exercise and make new friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Bike to work \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>I know there are a lot of\u00a0folks in our community who dropped a bunch of weight by making one change: they biked to work, or biked to their friend\u2019s house, or started biking generally. \u00a0You get from Point A to Point B, you save money on gas, and you get a workout. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Play a childhood game \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0What games did you play as a child? Capture the flag? Kick the can? Simple tag?
