Screening tests can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best.<\/p>\n<h2>Screening Guidelines<\/h2>\n<p>Regular screening, beginning at age 50, is the key to preventing colorectal cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) <a class=\"tp-link-policy tp-external-link-fix broken_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/Page\/Document\/UpdateSummaryFinal\/colorectal-cancer-screening2?ds=1&amp;s=colorectal\" target=\"_self\">recommends<\/a> that adults age 50 to 75 be screened for colorectal cancer, and that adults age 76 to 85 ask their doctor if they should be screened.<\/p>\n<h2>When Should I Begin to Get Screened?<\/h2>\n<p>You should begin screening for colorectal cancer soon after turning 50, then continue getting screened at regular intervals. However, you may need to be tested earlier than 50, or more often than other people, if\u2014<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You or a close relative have had colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer.<\/li>\n<li>You have an <a class=\"tp-link-policy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ibd\/index.htm\">inflammatory bowel disease<\/a> such as Crohn\u2019s disease or ulcerative colitis.<\/li>\n<li>You have a genetic syndrome such as <a class=\"tp-link-policy tp-external-link-fix\" href=\"http:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/condition\/familial-adenomatous-polyposis\" target=\"_self\">familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)<\/a> or <a class=\"tp-link-policy tp-external-link-fix broken_link\" href=\"http:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/condition=lynchsyndrome\" target=\"_self\">hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome).<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Speak with your doctor about when you should begin screening and how often you should be tested.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/colorectal\/basic_info\/screening\/index.htm\" class=\"broken_link\">https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/colorectal\/basic_info\/screening\/index.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A screening test is used to look for a disease when a person doesn\u2019t have symptoms.
