stair

We use them everyday … walking to class, at home — and usually by the time we’re done walking up them, we’re out of breath.  And there is a reason!  When you walk or run up the stairs, you are using your quadriceps, your hamstrings, your hip flexors, your ENTIRE lower extremity!  So, if you’re looking to bump-up your workout, add in some stair work!

Here are a JUST A FEW of the benefits — adapted from a blog post I found.  You can read it here.

– A great cardiovascular workout: running up the stairs QUICKLY increases your heart rate!

– It is FREE!  (Just think, there are portable Stairmasters all over the place)

– It is a weight-bearing exercise that can help you build bone strength (i.e. one benefit of strength training)

– You can incorporate stairs into your routine regardless of your fitness level.  If you are just starting out, begin walking, working your way up to running.  Make sure to stay in your Target Heart Rate Zone and always be aware of the intensity!  A great play to try your workout would be at the stairs by the bell tower!
