NCAA Hall of Champions 4/12/13

4/12/13

(3 hours) 9am-12noon: 2013 NCAA Membership and Student-Athlete Affairs Community Day and National Student-Athlete Day

Location: NCAA Hall of Champions

This event was unique because it involved a bunch of collegiate student athletes from Indiana universities and colleges working together for a big community service project. The service project was to make 100 fleece, “tie” blankets for a group called: Project Linus. This organization is based off of the Peanuts character-Linus who carries a blanket around for a sense of security and warmth. The blankets that are made by this organization goes to anyone in need of a warm blanket or to kids that are in hospitals. I think that this was a good pick of an organization because this type of activity of making blankets is a good activity for anyone of all ages and a new blanket is always comforting during times of trouble.

As a group we had supplies for 100 fleece blankets and it took us near the entire time to finish them but we completed our goal. The collegiate athletes were also paired with high school athletes and we served as mentors for them guiding them through this project as well as answering many questions that they asked about college and sports. I thought that this was a great experience for the collegiate athletes and that it sent a good message to the high school kids that were participating with us.

Overall I thought this was a very worthy cause that is a suitable activity for any aged person or any organization. Providing blankets could simply spread warmth and joy to the recipient and knowing that someone is benefiting from those blankets is the goal of this type of project.

Jireh Sports 4/6/13

Volunteering at Jireh Sports: April 6, 2013      9am-12noon (3hours)

This is volunteer opportunity was pretty straightforward. Those of us that went came in and had the job of cleaning pretty much anything and everything that needed a good ole’ scrubbing. The main areas that we took care of were:

a) main gymnastic gym- We scrubbed down and sanitized every piece of gymnastic equipment possible, mats, pads, beams, bars, etc.

b) main lobby

c) bathrooms

d) weight room equipment in Gym #3

e) kitchen area

f) Learning Center- Took hundreds of books of the shelf and sanitized them as well as the shelves they were on. We sanitized tables, chairs, computer equipment, as well as a bunch of other learning equipment.

e) Outside- We picked up trash in both the front and back of the building.

Although this was a down and dirty job, I wondered if that type of cleaning had ever been done in the building before. Although we didn’t get to meet or see any of the kids that used the building, I know for a fact they will be appreciative that they get to use clean and sparkling equipment and that the facilities are more organized and neat. From a health standpoint the sanitizing we did in the buildings will help prevent the spread of diseases that could potentially keep any of their athletes out of competition.

I felt pretty accomplished with the amount of work that our group accomplished over a 3-hour time period. At the end, the man working there told us he was grateful of the work and allowed us to try out and “play” on the gymnastics equipment for a few minutes because it would stink to clean the equipment and not get to play on it. So different people from our group tried out the springy floor, the balance beams, the trampoline, the parallel bars, the uneven bars, and the rings. It was fun to attempt to use any of those items–not that any of us knew any tricks or skills. It gave me a sense of understanding how tough of a sport most of these kids were involved in and the type of training and skill required to be good at gymnastics.

Ch 6 and Final Reflection

After reading “Not For Sale” and discussing it in class or even with some of my classmates, the main thing I took away from reading this book are more details as to how, who, why, and where human trafficking takes place. I think that it is important that more and more people become aware of this issue. I can agree that I was one of those ignorant/misinformed individuals who had no idea that this type of thing could happen anywhere.

The effect it had on me personally was that I become more informed and aware of the situation and issue of human trafficking. I think poverty and human trafficking go nearly hand-in-hand as an issue. I think the two are very correlated. I think the two issues amplify each others’ problem and makes both poverty and human trafficking even worse.

I don’t think my perceived notion on poverty and human trafficking had to change that much this semester. My view over a period of time hasn’t had to change very much but has been confirmed.

I think this was a valuable and meaningful topic for the course and volunteer work and such… My opinion is that I wish we could of seen how we could personally pick this as a topic and how we can help with the the nerve clubs or bridges that

Greentree Assisted Living 3/23/13

On March 23, 2013 I volunteered at Greentree Assisted Living from 1:30-4:30 (3 hours) for their Easter Event.

Upon looking at the email stating what we might be doing I really didn’t know what to expect to be doing or seeing during my time there. I, along with two fellow Butler students: Kendra and Alex, were placed with Lora who worked at the center. That day seemed to be extra special for the residents and family members. We were in charge of face painting residents in the dementia unit to look like Easter bunnies. I think its safe to say I wasn’t expected to be assigned to the face painting and I think the other two fellow BU students agreed.

The first person I had to face paint was actually a worker from Greentree. Being my first customer, I made sure to go all out with face painting in the best way that I could. I surprised myself with how I was able to do and even got a few compliments. Next Alex and Kendra practiced on each other and Kendra even practiced on myself. I think she did a great job–but let’s just say I looked like a pretty crazy bunny out of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The paint took near up to 20-30 minutes at the end of the day to get all the way off in my dorm but it was well worth it.

After practicing on each other, we finally were able to paint a few of the residents. It was difficult trying to make sense out of what some of the residents were trying to say but was enjoyable nonetheless. After I painted some residents I was able to paint some kids. Most of the kids it seemed like they were family members of staff but nonetheless it was very enjoyable and the kids were a tad more appreciative and into the whole face painting activity rather than the adults. Some of the adults were just more chatty and they wanted somebody to talk to and didn’t really care that there was an Easter Event. It was fun to talk to the residents but some of them were hard to talk to and communicate with so it was definitely a learning experience for me as well.

I have to say I was surprised with how fast the time went. It was an enjoyable day and I can say I didn’t expect to be painted as an Easter Bunny when I walked in that morning. I am glad that I was able to make some kids and residents smile in the process as well.

Ch. 5 Post

According to Batstone, research shows five “predictable elements” in child sex trafficking, regardless of the geographic region studied. List and briefly describe the five elements. How might a global focus on any one of these elements disrupt or reduce the number of victims of child sex trafficking?

The five “predictable elements” in child sex trafficking, according to the novel, Not For Sale by David Batsone are as followed:

Recruitment: This is where traffickers target children in societies that don’t have a good sense of social power.

Extraction: Traffickers will take children out of their home environment and to a place foreign and far away. In this type of situation, the children will be taken to places with corrupt law enforcement that they cannot turn to for help.

Control: Every aspect of a child’s life is controlled–including the basic means of life. A child doesn’t think he/she can survive on their own if they left.

Violence: This is used by traffickers as a technique to ensure that children in their possession are too scared of punishment to even think about running away.

Exploitation: Those traffickers or slaveholders show no concern for the well-being of a child because their ultimate motive is to make as much money in the most efficient way possible.

I think a Global Focus on Extraction or Recruitment and even more specifically the law enforcement would help children in this situation. Law enforcement is generally so corrupt that even if children could escape, they know that they cannot trust the police for help. If this were not the case then it would be easier to prosecute traffickers and slaveholders for crimes and it would be easier to give children a sense of protection in the outside world.

Chapter 4 Post

Briefly describe how Nadia was deceived into the sex trade. Why did she leave Moldova? Where was she going? Where did she actually go?

Nadia had a young son and couldn’t afford to pay the school’s enrollment fees or buy a school uniform. Nadia didn’t have any family members that could help her either. She met a “friend” who told her of an opportunity to work a job in Italy. Nadia was offered a job within a week and she made the split decision to go, to leave her son behind in hopes of making money that she could save to help her son. She left in hopes of providing for her son.

Nadia believed that Katrina had found her a job working in a restaurant in Italy. She met 6 other girls who were told the same thing. At first the group of girls were stopped at the Border with Romania then she was kept for seven days in confinement and was told that they had trouble securing tourist visas. They then left for Serbia. Once they were able to get to Serbia they were told to “perform” well because men would decide if they were suitable enough to work. Nadia and the other girls were very skeptical by this point but followed instructions. Russian men in Serbia took Nadia and she now worked for him as a sex slave. After a while Nadia was saved by a Romanian girl were sent to Albania. On a boat the driver stopped and raped her before taking them across the border. Once in Albania the POLICE met the girls and took them and raped each of them again.

From there she spent only a month working as a sex slave. At age 22 she was considered a bit old and was then sold to the Italians. On a boat to Italy she decided to escape and was found by a women who sent her to Padre Cesare who helped save her.

Chapter 3

3. Briefly explain Charles’ “initiation” into the Lord’s Resistance Army. Why was this for of initiation so effective in ensuring Charles did not try to escape?

Charles was captured with several other boys and a few adult men. The initiation of the boys consisted of being ordered around by the commander with a gun pointed at them. The commander ordered the boys to take a club and beat “ignorant men…  who were traitors” to their death. When one of the boys hesitated, the club was snatched and used to hit the boy. This terrorizing technique worked. It was either hit and kill or be killed. Lastly they needed to lick the blood of their victims. The last threat that was given by the commander was that they could not return home because the boys were now murders and the families of the men they had just killed would try and seek revenge.

These means of initiation were unfortunately very powerful. They saw that if they didn’t obey or if they were traitors then they would be beaten in killed. If they were to run off then they would be sought out by people who wanted revenge. It was a lose-lose situation and the boys felt that their only option was to stay and follow. That is why Charles’ initiation was so effective.

Chapter 2 Post

Briefly describe how Maya and her relatives were deceived into slavery. What are two preventative measures that others in Maya’s situation could utilize to avoid deception?

Maya’s relatives first took a visit to the brick kiln. The deceitfulness of that first visit was what staged the way for the trust that they place in working for Mr. Vasu in the future. Narayan and his uncle, Amar, first took a visit and Mr. Vasu served an outstanding meal because he knew the two men were going to report back to their families and bring back workers if they knew money was involved and that he would get workers.

Mr. Vasu agreed verbally to pay the family up front which is the main reason they ended up working at the brick kiln. They were also told that by working for Mr. Vasu they could repay their debt. Mr. Vasu also made the family sign a contract knowing that the individuals who signed would be illiterate.

Protective measures that I would take in precaution would be know how to read so that when a contract was thrust in front of them they would have at least a vague idea of what they are getting themselves into. They would be able to understand the terms and conditions better this way.

I think another precaution that they could take so that they would have to be forced into this situation would be a) don’t take any money up front so then you not bound to repay that money and/or b) work someplace that you are not obligate to live at. I know this is a very hard situation to think about which is why I would have struggled to avoid forced labor if I was in that same situation.
