{"id":694,"date":"2012-10-25T17:57:05","date_gmt":"2012-10-25T21:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/mybutlerhelp\/?page_id=694"},"modified":"2012-11-01T11:11:02","modified_gmt":"2012-11-01T15:11:02","slug":"glossary-of-terms","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/mybutlerhelp\/glossary-of-terms\/","title":{"rendered":"Glossary of Terms"},"content":{"rendered":"<dl>\n<dt><strong>Academic Plan<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>A student&#8217;s major.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Academic Program<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>The school or college to which a student belongs &#8211; typically, driven by the student&#8217;s major or Academic Plan.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Action<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>For advisors, an Action can be one of three things: Enroll (adding a class), Drop (dropping a class), or Normal Maintenance (changing a grade basis). The Action field on the Enrollment Request page defaults to Enroll when inserting a new row. Each action has a unique effect on the student&#8217;s Study List (schedule).<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Advisor Center<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>Advisor Center, located under <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-58\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/mybutlerhelp\/files\/2012\/09\/arrow.gif\" alt=\"arrow\" width=\"10\" height=\"13\" \/>\u00a0<strong>Self Service<\/strong>, provides advisors with access to information about advisees and the ability to enroll students into classes, when necessary. See <strong><a title=\"What is the \u2018advisor center\u2019 and how do I use it?\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/mybutlerhelp\/question\/what-is-the-advisor-center-and-how-do-i-use-it\/\">What is the Advisor Center?<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 for more information.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Career<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>On <em>My.Butler<\/em> search screens, the word &#8220;Career&#8221; applies only to students. A student&#8217;s career is either undergraduate (UGRD) or graduate (GRAD).<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Catalog Nbr <\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>Catalog Nbr is the number that follows the subject area when we commonly refer to a class like CH 105. <em>105<\/em> is the catalog nbr. Do not confuse the catalog nbr with the class number.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Class Nbr<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>The Class Nbr is a number that uniquely identifies each class in the database. Class nbrs are 4-digits and are printed in the left hand column of the <em>Schedule of Classes<\/em>. Do not confuse the class nbr with the catalog number.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Enrollment Request<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>Registering a student in classes or making changes to an existing schedule. An enrollment request can be one or more actions taken that affects a student&#8217;s registration \u2014 adding a class, dropping a class, or changing a grade basis. When you begin registering a student, you are beginning an enrollment request. One student can be associated with many enrollment requests. For example, when you initially enroll a student in all of his or her classes, that is one enrollment request. You may go back and drop a class in a new, second, enrollment request and so on.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Faculty Center <\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>Faculty Center, located under <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/mybutlerhelp\/files\/2012\/09\/arrow.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/mybutlerhelp\/files\/2012\/09\/arrow.gif\" alt=\"arrow\" width=\"10\" height=\"13\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<strong>Self Service<\/strong>, is an area for faculty to get quick access to their rosters and advisee information. See <strong><a title=\"What is the \u201cfaculty center\u201d and how do I use it?\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/mybutlerhelp\/question\/what-is-the-faculty-center-and-how-do-i-use-it\/\">What is Faculty Center?<\/a><\/strong> in the Faculty Center Help area for more information.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>ID number<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>The ID is a 9-digit number assigned (arbitrarily by the software) to all students and employees at Butler. The 9-digit ID uniquely identifies each person in the database. The ID is on all Butler ID cards (leave off the last two numbers). It helps to have your advisees&#8217; ID numbers handy for registration.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Institution<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>The Institution field appears on some search pages and will typically default to BUTLR (not a typo &#8211; the system allows for a 5-character code for the institution). While some queries require that you type in the institution code, you will not usually have to specify this code when using the system.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Logging In\/Out<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>To login, start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the desktop icon. Type &#8220;my.butler.edu&#8221; (no quotes) in the address field near the top of the window and press <strong>Enter<\/strong> or click <strong>Go<\/strong> (i.e. go to the http:\/\/my.butler.edu web page). Do not type &#8220;www&#8221; \u2014 it&#8217;s not needed. Enter your username and password and click the <strong>Sign in<\/strong> button. To log out, click the <strong>Sign Out<\/strong> link and close the browser window.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Pagelet<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>A subdivision of <em>My.Butler&#8217;s<\/em> content display area that features or highlights a topic or task. <a title=\"How can I customize My.Butler?\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/mybutlerhelp\/question\/how-do-i-customize-my-butler\/\">Pagelets can be displayed, hidden or reordered<\/a> on the tabs available to a user to customize how <em>My.Butler<\/em> looks.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Related Class<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>Related class usually refers to a lab. You generally cannot enroll a student in just the lab; you must choose the lecture first. After choosing the lecture, you use the Related 1 field to choose the lab.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Section<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>Section number is the third number we commonly associate to a class. Some courses \u2014 like EN102 \u2014 have many sections while others \u2014 like 400-level seminars \u2014 have only one section.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Study List<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>A study list is a student&#8217;s class schedule.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Subject Area<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>All subject areas in have a corresponding two- or three-character code. For example, CH is the two-character subject area code for chemistry. MDA is the three-character subject code for media arts.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Term code<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>Term code refers to the 4-digit code that represents a semester, summer session, or other academic time period. For example, the term code for Spring 2013 is represented by the code 4123. The naming scheme is: the 4 means 2000; the 12 means academic year 2012-2013, and the 3 means the spring semester (fall = 1, summer I = 6 and summer II = 7).\u00a0Some examples of term codes are listed below.\u00a0<\/dd>\n<dd>Summer 1, 2013=<strong>4126<\/strong><\/dd>\n<dd>Summer 2, 2013=<strong>4127<\/strong><\/dd>\n<dd>Fall, 2013=<strong>4131<\/strong><\/dd>\n<dd>Spring, 2014=<strong>4133<\/strong><\/dd>\n<dt><strong>User ID and Password:<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>Your user ID is the same your Butler network username (i.e. your email minus the &#8216;@butler.edu&#8217;). All Butler students, staff, and faculty have access to the <em>MyButler <\/em>portal. However, it may be necessary to <a title=\"What is \u201cinstructor access\u201d or \u201cadvisor access\u201d?\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/mybutlerhelp\/question\/what-is-instructor-access-or-advisor-access\/\">request certain types of access<\/a> to the various databases accessed through the <em>MyButler <\/em>portal.\u00a0<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Academic Plan A student&#8217;s major.
