Lesson Plans

Listed below are some lesson plans to use in an elementary or middle school classroom.  There is an overview of each lesson, the suitable grade levels, and a link to the lesson plan.

This lesson is related to the novel Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix, which was mentioned in the “Definition” portion on this site.  You will find about 20 discussion questions along with a book summary.  This lesson plan is meant for late elementary school (grades 4-6) and early middle school (grades 6-7).

This next lesson is related to the first book of the Sisters Gimm series, The Fairy-Tale Detectives, by Michael Buckley.  In this novel two sisters, Sabrina and Daphne, are unraveling the mystery behind a loose giant in the town of Ferryport Landing.  This book and discussion questions is meant for late elementary students.  Another lesson for this book involves writing and dessigning the town of Ferryport Landing.

This lesson has to do with Ella Enchanted, a novel by Gail Carson Levine.  In this novel Ella his been gifted, though she considers herself cursed, with having to obey any order given to her.  This novel and lesson is suitable for thid to fifth graders and includes a full lesson plan that will allow them to to identify elements of fairy tales and write thier own.

This lesson has to do with the book Beware of the Storybook Wolves by Lauren Child.  In this book a child Herb accidentally left his Red-Riding Book open and two wolves have escaped from his book.  This book and subsequent lesson plan can be used for kindergarteners to second graders. 

This lesson does not have to do with a book, but with the sub-genre of fractured-fairy tales.  This lesson plan has mid-to-late elementary students analyzing fairy tales and creating their own tale.

This lesson is meant for early elementary students.  Students will create their own storybook and will work with others.
