Chicago as a city ate fine, but southside Chicago
is one of the most violent places to be, or so it may seem.
We were brung up on the belief that people like us
were hoodlums or bangers. They saw us as nuisances
and future murderers. But we saw that as a lie
and expressed that in rhymes. To us were were
a community, a place where kids run and play.
Now don’t get me wrong. There are killers and thieves,
but that’s not what we’ve chosen to be. I think
of the southside as home, not something people
should be afraid of. Killers and thieves want you
to believe this. But I encourage you to go see places
like Oakland Park, instead of acting like you’re scared
of the dark. Killers and thieves that’s what they want
you to believe. But you believe 1 + 2 must be 3,
and that the opposite of red is green. So you believe
what you can conceive. Like President Obama
as a boy growing up on the southside of Chicago.
