Video Assignment

Goals:

Through this movie project we are attempting to tie together various ideas and topics from ED 245 into something relevant to our professional growth, teaching, and/or the students we will educate. This assignment will help us expand our knowledge of this particular media tool (iMovie or Windows Movie Maker) in addition to demonstrating its effectiveness in the classroom setting. With our movie we are demonstrating the importance of fair use and its relevance to students and education today. During our time in ED 245 and through discussions, we have realized we were not knowledgeable about the topic of fair use. This video could be an effective tool for representing the general lack of awareness around this topic as well as educating students about fair use in general.

Content Standards:

This assignment follows and meets the InTASC Core Teaching Standards, the National Educational Technology Standards as well as the Performance Indicators for teachers in particular:

Description of Assignment:

By using a movie making program, we will make a product that displays particular aspects of fair use for our class, other students, teachers and parents to view.  It will be creative and fun way to show the content we are covering concerning the relevance of fair use. The video itself, shows our comfort as instructors with using these types of programs and that we encourage interactive learning in our classroom.

We compiled media by interviewing other students about their knowledge of fair use as well as recording ourselves in a creative fashion. We found media about fair use via the website YouTube to incorporate into our project to demonstrate the unique features of the media. Using the program iMovie we integrated this media together into a video offering both information about fair use, and propagating the general feel of the lack of knowledge about the topic.

We hope this video is a funny and creative method that can be used in classrooms or completed by other students to convey information about an important subject.

Human Subjects, Media, and Copyright Plan

We plan to film students at Butler University in addition to ourselves. These students have verbally committed to being filmed and are aware that their interview will be used for the purpose of this assignment. The questions they were asked were approved before hand and they were prepped for the process of filming.

In addition to this we have incorporated a clip from the website YouTube explaining fair use. It is in accordance with the fair use policy that we use this media because our projects are for the purposes of education and will be viewed by only other class members as well as our Professor (the media created by this assignment is not intended for the general public). Also, we do not plan to claim any of the material provided in this film as our own, all sites will be cited appropriately and documented effectively.

Our plan is to present an informative, comical, and accurate description of fair use through this video.  We begin by representing a news station “Wiki World News” and then cutting to our different interviewers. These interviews then complete the interviews of the subjects (asking the preapproved questions) and this is then complied into the video. Cutting back to “the studio” we then call on advice from the “experts.” This is where we have integrated the YouTube video into our project.  Finally we cut back to the studio to conclude the presentation.

Reflection

Overall this project provided a unique way for us to incorporate all that we have learned about technology this year into one final assignment. I am very pleased with the work that our group did and I think this video is something I would be comfortable using in my classroom in the future as a learning tool.

Throughout this course we have learned the importance of integrating media into the classroom setting. This video proves we are comfortable using media and we value it as a tool for education. I am happy with the work our group performed to assemble this project.  We worked well and incorporated many ideas to compile something that reflects our knowledge of the application of various media tools.  I enjoyed this project because it both modeled learning/projects that I could see myself assigning to students in the future and proved to be something useful for my own learning about fair use.

In many ways, this assignment was similar to our photo montage. We used “dumb” technology to produce a piece of media that displays something important. We had to provide all the information, but the technology provided by the program iMovie helped us to integrate various aspects of our media into one final video.  It was a unique assignment and I really could appreciate the many aspects that had to come together to make our video a success.

My hope is when we show this to the class it can be an accurate demonstration of fair use as well as display our comfort with using media of this type in the classroom.
