{"id":2212,"date":"2012-01-24T20:53:39","date_gmt":"2012-01-25T01:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2012-01-24T20:54:09","modified_gmt":"2012-01-25T01:54:09","slug":"so-many-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/2012\/01\/24\/so-many-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"So Many Questions!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each day we ask the kids to answer a lot of questions.\u00a0 Instead of telling them what to do, it is more effective if the kids problem solve to figure out the process and answer themselves.\u00a0 Today, I posed two questions.\u00a0 In Math Workshop I asked, &#8220;Which line is longer?&#8221;\u00a0 During our science exploration I asked, &#8220;How do you grow grass?&#8221;\u00a0 I am very proud to say that both questions were answered quite well!<\/p>\n<p>During Math Workshop, we have been focusing on measuring.\u00a0 So today, there were two tape lines on the floor.\u00a0 Once I asked the kids about the lines, I observed them brainstorm.\u00a0 One student said, &#8220;Maybe we can use a ruler, no wait&#8230;that didn&#8217;t work for the straight line yesterday.&#8221;\u00a0 Another student jumped in and said, &#8220;Wait!\u00a0 We can use the tape measure that we learned about yesterday!&#8221;\u00a0 (In my head I thought &#8216;connection!&#8217;)\u00a0 After the group had decided what their process was we went off to measure and answer the question.\u00a0 With the use of the tape measure, we actually found out that the zig-zag line was longer even though it appeared shorter!\u00a0 The group&#8217;s conclusion was it is always important to measure!!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2213\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/01\/IMG_0578.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2213\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2213\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/01\/IMG_0578-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/01\/IMG_0578-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/01\/IMG_0578-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/01\/IMG_0578.jpg 1066w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Which line is longer?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This afternoon, I was working with a group of students on this week&#8217;s science exploration.\u00a0 Once I posed the question we had a list of ideas!\u00a0 &#8220;Grass needs soil!&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Grass needs water!&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Grass needs food!&#8221;\u00a0 With very excited students I introduced the idea of growing grass in gloves.\u00a0 By putting a water soaked cotton ball into each fingertip of the glove, the kids had their &#8220;soil&#8221;
