{"id":3332,"date":"2012-05-21T18:20:37","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T22:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/?p=3332"},"modified":"2012-05-21T18:20:37","modified_gmt":"2012-05-21T22:20:37","slug":"the-power-of-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/2012\/05\/21\/the-power-of-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I have shared in previous posts, our class has been exploring many different materials in the last few months. \u00a0Since about March, our friends have been using many different materials to tell stories. \u00a0The use of materials during Writer&#8217;s Workshop is something I actually observed when I was in Portland, Oregon, at the Opal School. \u00a0They integrate the arts into Writer&#8217;s Workshop and call it Story Workshop. \u00a0Kids are allowed to use paints, clay, blocks, and even more to help them tell their stories. \u00a0As a class, we have been doing this too for the last few months during Writer&#8217;s Workshop. \u00a0To show an example of the power of materials, I thought I would share the story of Maxwell and Olivia.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Maxwell and Olivia were working together to write a story about their first few days of school. \u00a0They were using the story people (smaller pictures of each of the students in the classroom) to tell their story. \u00a0They were using the story people almost like action figures moving them around and acting out the different parts. \u00a0On Thursday, Maxwell and Olivia shared their story. \u00a0The rest of the class gave suggestions and asked questions that would help guide Maxwell and Olivia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3335\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/05\/IMG_1419.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3335\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3335\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/05\/IMG_1419-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/05\/IMG_1419-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/05\/IMG_1419-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/files\/2012\/05\/IMG_1419.jpg 1066w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maxwell and Olivia were using the story people to create a story about the beginning of school.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Today, Maxwell and Olivia came back to this story&#8230;only this time with a different material. \u00a0Today the chose to start writing a book about the same story. \u00a0For the entire Writer&#8217;s Workshop, the two worked together to add details and different parts to their story. \u00a0While we have not had a chance to come back as a class and talk about it, I know that when we do, the story will have even more in it!
