{"id":5469,"date":"2012-12-05T14:17:02","date_gmt":"2012-12-05T19:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/?p=5469"},"modified":"2012-12-05T14:17:02","modified_gmt":"2012-12-05T19:17:02","slug":"geometry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/school60\/2012\/12\/05\/geometry\/","title":{"rendered":"Geometry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week we started a new unit of study in Geometry.\u00a0 On Monday, we gave the problem, &#8220;Mrs. Clark created a shape that had more than 4 sides.\u00a0 What shape did she create?&#8221;\u00a0 This lead to a lot of exploration about shapes.\u00a0 We came up with hexagons, octagons, and even a few different 3D shapes.\u00a0 The kids came up with a list and we started naming the shapes.\u00a0 At the end of yesterday&#8217;s Math Workshop a few friends got into a discussion about octagons.\u00a0 Ruth said all octagons look like stop signs &amp; Aasha said they just had to have 8 sides.<\/p>\n<p>Today we explored that question.\u00a0 Could an octagon look like anything with 8 sides or was it a set shape?\u00a0 We found out together that all octagons had to have 8, CONGRUENT sides.\u00a0 I gave the kids the challenge today.\u00a0 Could they figure it out; what is an octagon?<\/p>\n<p>I have to say that the class was on a mission.
