Taking Time for Those in Need

It’s that time of year again. The snow is beginning to fall and temperatures are dropping. The children are sending their Christmas wishes in a letter addressed to the North Pole and families are getting together to celebrate the holidays, give gifts and eat large portions of food. At least, that’s what everyone hopes for…

There are many people out there who struggle to find a place to sleep at night or worry about when their next meal will be. That is why it’s critical to give to those in need. All across America and here in Indianapolis there are people in need.

Some gentlemen from Butler University have been giving back to the community all year with various organizations in the Indianapolis area. Those gentlemen are part of Lambda Chi Alpha, a fraternity on campus. Members of this fraternity are pictured in the slideshow seen at the top. As a member of the fraternity, each brother must complete:

  • at least 12 hours of community service per semester
  • complete those 12 hours in the Indianapolis area
  • Log those hours into Lambda Chi Alpha’s system to keep track of the hours not only for each brother, but for the house as a whole

The Student Perspective

I was able to catch up Lambda Chi Alpha’s High Theta/External VP, sophomore Michael Boyd, who said taking his position was something he’s always wanted to do;

“I have always been interested in service. Truly one of my passions, I found it exciting that this office would allow me to bring about so much good to the Indianapolis community. It felt a very natural position to come in to, serving as a similar role/presence before.” – Michael Boyd

Sophomore Nolan Mikowski (whose interview i have posted at the end of this article) says there are multiple ways to make a difference;

“A phrase that I hear a lot is time, treasure and talents. Those are three ways that you can make a difference.” – Nolan Mikowski

Fellow Sophomore Samuel Leinon says the time and effort put in by the Lambda Chi’s could be seen on the faces of those who they were helping;

“When I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Indianapolis, I was given the oppurtunity to serve thanksgiving dinner to those in need and it was incredible to see how thankful they were that we were there to serve them a good meal.” – Samuel Leinon

Where to Volunteer

Lambda Chi Alpha has helped out multiple volunteer centers in the area; Boys and Girls Club of America, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, the MLK Community Center, Wheeler Mission, and Neighborlink. Michael Boyd says it is always nice to see more people to get involved but to make sure it is something you truly want to do;

“It is important to find an organization or social justice issue that they are most passionate about. From there, search for an organization in Indianapolis that serves in the area relating to that passion.” – Michael Boyd

Keep up with Lambda Chi Alpha

This fall semester alone Lambda Chi Alpha has logged nearly 800 service hours in the Indianapolis area alone. To follow Lambda Chi Alpha at Butler University follow them on Twitter and like their page on Facebook where they give updates on not only service events but also their other philanthropy events!

Make sure to take time to think about and help those who are less fortunate, especially during this holiday season. People who give back can not only change someone’s life, but help their community as a whole.
