Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Lunch and Learn Opportunities

Through a grant sponsored by the Indiana State Department of Health and the Indiana Cancer Consortium, Healthy Horizons is holding several breast cancer awareness events across campus, including a series of lunch and learn educational discussions. Friday, October 3 – Noon in Atherton Union, room 326
Breast Cancer 101 (An introduction to breast cancer)

This presentation will introduce participants to the topic of breast cancer. Participants will gain an increased knowledge on Susan G. Komen of Central Indiana and the impact of its mission. Participants will also gain a better understanding of breast cancer and warning signs. The discussion will include the 3-step early detection plan, the impact of research, breast cancer treatment options, and how to become involved in the breast cancer movement.

Wednesday, October 15 – Noon in Atherton Union, room 302
Genetics and Hereditary Component of Breast Cancer

This presentation will focus on the genetic and hereditary aspect of breast cancer. Stephanie is a genetics counselor with St. Vincent who is involved in their Cancer Genetics Risk Assessment Program. The discussion will include common genetic mutations and hereditary effects in relation to a person developing or living with breast cancer.

Ask the Doctor Series

This discussion will focus on the importance of breast cancer screening strategies. Dr. Goulet will discuss from a breast cancer surgeon’s point of view, what are ideal and/or optimal screening strategies to prevent or reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions and address concerns on breast cancer topics with the doctor. Dr. Goulet is one of the most renowned breast surgeons in the country.
