As a music student, I really like the practicing facilities in Lilly Hall. They also have a program where you can rent out rooms for rehearsals which is really cool if you need a bigger space to rehearse. You can also rent out the recital hall for a concert, as well. It gives one a real sense of independence and empowerment as far as their collegiate music career. I like how the all of the dining halls are laid out and how Starbucks is centrally located, its a great place to study. I also go to the Library a lot, its never too full to find a quiet place to study. I use the HRC to work out about 3-5 times a week and its a great facility to exercise or play basketball on the court. I’ve used the writers studio too, which is a great resource to edit papers for FYS. I’ve had great experiences with Butler’s IT services and all technological assistance they provide.

What is your proudest moment as a Bulldog?

I haven’t even been here for a year yet, but I’ve already had an experience that I will probably remember for the rest of my life. The Butler Chorale had a reading opportunity for composers first semester. Essentially, a composition student could compose a choral piece and would have 15 minutes to teach the piece and conduct the chorale as they read through it. I composed a short choral piece and signed up for the reader and I was incredibly nervous. Partially because I was presenting a piece that I composed to a group of kids I didn’t know and partially because I was incredibly intimidating by all the talented upperclassmen who would be getting their first impression of me on this piece. It turned out I only had 13 minutes to teach the piece and run through it. I was fumbling as I conducted it and I was shaking the whole time because I was so nervous standing in front of the entire choir as a freshman in the first few months of school . But everyone in the choir was so nice and welcoming and I really felt accepted by them. After the piece was over they all clapped and expressed how much they enjoyed reading the piece and how much they liked it. It felt so great to be appreciated by the upperclassmen and not looked down on. Whenever I saw any of them in the hallway from there on out, they always said “hi” and smiled at me with such kindness and respect. I will probably remember that first reading for the rest of my life.
