Jennifer NiehoffWhat is your favorite campus resource at Butler?

One resource that is often overlooked is one’s Residential Assistant, or RA. Although many students view RAs as the “bad guys”, often put in the position of enforcing rules such as noise and alcohol policies, I personally have used my RA to help me with professor recommendations, campus involvement, and even personal issues. Just the other day, my roommate and I debunked our beds and when we needed help our RA stopped what she was doing and found tools for us to get the job done faster. A RA’s job is not to yell at you for breaking the rules, it is to make sure your college transition is as easy and safe as possible.

What is your proudest moment as a Bulldog?

A requirement for initiation into Phi Delta Chi is the successful completion of a signature book containing the names of all the active members; in order to complete this, I was required to approach the actives, many of whom I had never met and were much older than I, and ask them to sign my book, twice, but, never twice in the same meeting. And, if that wasn’t enough, we were asked to learn the names and hometowns, in alphabetical order by pledge class, of every active member and then recite those names and hometowns in front of the active members. As that dreadful night approached, I wondered just how long we would be stuck in a room reciting names; according to our pledge masters, the previous pledge classes had taken upwards of two hours. I can honestly say that lining up to recite those names was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of my life; no one wanted to be the person who kept us in that room for hours. Much to everyone’s surprise however, we passed with flying colors, finishing in thirty minutes and setting a new standard for next year’s pledge class. Although it had been tremendously frustrating, a huge amount of time, and intimidating work, I looked around my fellow new members who had worked just as hard as I had, trusted and depended on me, and had arrived at the same success—together. As the active members smiled, cheered, and clapped for us, I was overcome by a sense of pride in my pledge class, myself, and The Butler Way.
