Campus Traditions

Campus Traditions

Campus Golf – Bring your golf clubs to school, because Butler students love to “golf” around campus with tennis balls.  “Holes” are popular spots on campus such a star fountain, the observatory, etc.

Lawn Decorations – For Homecoming Week, we have a lawn decorating contest to go with the Homecoming theme.  All the Greek houses, residence halls and off campus students participate by decorating the lawns of the sorority houses. But these aren’t just simple decorations. Lawn Decs are huge, complex decorations that cover the entire front yard of all of the sororities. One year, Delta Gamma covered the entire front side of their house with a tarp.  Another year Kappa Alpha Theta had a school bus parked in their driveway. Needless to say, it gets intense. The night before the competition, everyone is out on the lawns decorating until like 3 or 4 am, like a campus-wide decorating party.

Yell Like Hell – Another big social event during homecoming. Fraternities, sororities, residence halls and off campus students team up to see who can put on the best cheer / dance skit for a panel of judges.  Routines normally last around 6 minutes and consist of anything from cheer stunts to break-dancing. Held in Hinkle Fieldhouse, Yell Like Hell is not only a great way to show your Bulldog spirit and get competitive, but also a good way to meet new people.

Midnight Snack – Twice a year, during Homecoming and Snowcoming Week, the Student Government Association brings in tons and tons of fast food, snacks, and delicious treats – Qdoba, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Duncan Donuts, pizza, etc. and at midnight everyone RUNS into the Reilly Room and grabs as much food as possible.

Stress-Less Week – This week takes place once a semester right before the week of finals.  Every day there are different events that students can participate in to relieve some of the stress from the upcoming exams and projects due.  Some events of the week include petting puppies, taking a relaxing candle light swim in the pool, and everyone’s favorite, massages.

Flip the Script – This is a delicious event that many of the students enjoy participating in.  Everything is flipped around, breakfast is served at night, and the faculty members are serving the students.  There is tons of food ranging from pancakes, to bacon to eggs. Then there are all the drinks, juice, pops ….seems endless.  It is a great way to relax with friends and take a break from all the studying that is happening.  Also as an added incentive there are a bunch of awesome raffles given away.

First-Year Skits – This is a musical extravaganzas/competition which take pairings Greek houses and puts on musical skits.  There is always a theme – for example, one year was “Back to the Future.” The participants sing and dance all about Butler and things that happen on campus

Spring Sports Spectacular – Greek houses, residence halls and off campus students compete against each other in fun “Olympic-like” events to raise money for Special Olympics. There are countless numbers of events going on at the Health and Recreation Center, Hinkle Field House, The Butler Bowl, and the Intramural Fields. Games vary from Volleyball to Chess to Oreo Stacking. Whatever your skill, there’s always a place for you to compete at Spring Sports on a team and help out the Special Olympians!

Dance Marathon – Is a 12-hour all-campus philanthropic event in support of Riley Hospital for Children. Participants must stand and dance for the entire time, participating in several different games and activities throughout the evening, as well as interacting with Riley kids, their families, and the doctors that care for them.

Trip (Blue III) – Butler’s real bulldog mascot. Not the man in a big bulldog outfit. This is a real living breathing Bulldog named Blue III – but everyong calls him “Trip.” He is the third in a young lineage of English Bulldogs to be the official Mascot of Butler University. Trip is owned and tended to by Michael Kaltenmark, a 2002 Butler graduate and the University’s Director of External Relations, and his wife, Tiffany. To read more about Trip and see the exciting life he lives check out his Twitter feed @ButlerBlue3.
