Powell for the National Poetry Series, selected poems by Daizjha Verrett and Paula Cloyd as contest finalists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/wits\/files\/2014\/09\/daizjha.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1634\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/wits\/files\/2014\/09\/daizjha.png\" alt=\"daizjha\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/wits\/files\/2014\/09\/daizjha.png 960w, http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/wits\/files\/2014\/09\/daizjha-659x438.png 659w, http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/wits\/files\/2014\/09\/daizjha-700x465.png 700w, http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/wits\/files\/2014\/09\/daizjha-332x220.png 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nDaizjha&#8217;s poem &#8220;Such Beauty in One Man&#8217;s Laugh&#8221; was one of our favorite pieces published in our third edition of the <em>Exclusive Ink<\/em> print journal, with all its vivid details and surprising turns of phrase.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Such Beauty in One Man&#8217;s Laugh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">He\u2019s laughing at the boy who spreads ketchup on his golden chicken.<br \/>\nHis laughter\u2019s thick and lofty, filling the room<br \/>\nwith its sound, drawing the family\u2019s attention<br \/>\nto the boy. The children join in the laughter,<br \/>\nfor this tradition of eating chicken is foreign<br \/>\nand new. Smells of divine meats and vegetables<br \/>\nfill the home, overpowering this laughter.<br \/>\nAgain it\u2019s silent and the clang and cling<br \/>\nof silverware resumes.<br \/>\nHe\u2019s stuck his gaze on the boy as he eats his<br \/>\nmeal and chuckles.<br \/>\nHe\u2019s cold yet warm.<br \/>\nHe\u2019s the hoe no the pickaxe in the shed.<br \/>\nHis light\u2019s dim and suspended in darkness.<br \/>\nHe\u2019s the beginning of the hurricane, the instant from calm to danger.<br \/>\nHe\u2019s a black onyx wrapped in silk and grunge.<br \/>\nHe\u2019s the canyon you wonder where it ends, where it begins.<br \/>\nHe\u2019s midnight where everything is hushed and silent but the people know<br \/>\nthere are secrets in the dark.<br \/>\nBut somehow this boy of weird taste brings out a genuine laugh,<br \/>\na joyous smile.<br \/>\nA remarkable night.<br \/>\nIt has been a while since he\u2019s laughed this laugh<br \/>\ncovered in dust and cobwebs from the months and years<br \/>\nof non-use. The family knows<br \/>\nthis and they can only be grateful for<br \/>\nthat night laughter has never struck that man<br \/>\nso hard he fell from his chair<br \/>\nholding that tiny belly.
