{"id":120,"date":"2017-05-24T11:07:49","date_gmt":"2017-05-24T15:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/writing\/?p=120"},"modified":"2024-02-29T14:26:03","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T19:26:03","slug":"what-i-did-on-my-sabbatical-by-shelly-furuness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/writing\/2017\/05\/24\/what-i-did-on-my-sabbatical-by-shelly-furuness\/","title":{"rendered":"What I did on my Sabbatical: by Shelly Furuness"},"content":{"rendered":"<ol>\n<li>Took an art class on drawing at the Indianapolis Art Center<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/writing\/2017\/04\/10\/story-of-creative-process\/\">Documented my creative process<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Took a tennis lesson<\/li>\n<li>Took a swim lesson<\/li>\n<li>Created little paintings with oil paints and really liked it<\/li>\n<li>Saw Hidden Figures in the movie theater at 10:00 in the morning all by myself on a Monday morning<\/li>\n<li>Wrote a book chapter about teaching middle schoolers in an online environment<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/writing\/2017\/05\/04\/books-i-read-during-sabbatical\/\">Read about 20 books<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/writing\/2017\/03\/14\/arent-you-too-old-for-a-tattoo\/\">Got a tattoo<\/a><\/li>\n<li>G<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/writing\/2017\/03\/14\/arent-you-too-old-for-a-tattoo\/\"><\/a>ot a massage<\/li>\n<li>Saw a nutritionist<\/li>\n<li>Wrote weekly at CTS and had several wonderful lunches in the cafe there<\/li>\n<li>Attended a Writing Workshop on Flash Memoir<\/li>\n<li>Learned about Scandinavia&#8217;s healthcare and education systems<\/li>\n<li>Met new Journey Fellow friends at Waycross in Bloomington, IN<\/li>\n<li>Canoed at Sugar Creek<\/li>\n<li>Hiked at Turkey Run with those Journey Fellow friends<\/li>\n<li>Contra danced in a barn near a historic covered bridge<\/li>\n<li>Made a story stick to walk with<\/li>\n<li>Spent 9 days in Florida with my boys and in-laws for Spring Break<\/li>\n<li>Went to Universal Studios to explore the expanded Harry Potter World<\/li>\n<li>Took a glass bottom boat ride in a natural spring in Florida<\/li>\n<li>Hit golf balls<\/li>\n<li>Worked out with fidelity the whole semester<\/li>\n<li>Learned that the Indiana Department of Education loved our Middle-Secondary Special Education proposal<\/li>\n<li>Tried spin class again<\/li>\n<li>Loved water aerobics<\/li>\n<li>Watched an Atlanta Braves spring training game<\/li>\n<li>Started a blog<\/li>\n<li>Began a daily writing practice thanks to Bryan&#8217;s Boot Camp<\/li>\n<li>Drove my son to weight training all semester<\/li>\n<li>Meditated with Oprah and Deepak for 21 days<\/li>\n<li>Had brunch with my friends more than once<\/li>\n<li>Attended Birdman with a live drumming performance at Clowes<\/li>\n<li>Attended several One Butler Brain Project lectures with my boys<\/li>\n<li>Volunteered to review science textbooks for my boys&#8217; school district<\/li>\n<li>Hung out at the middle school team meetings at the Lab School on Fridays from February-May<\/li>\n<li>Wrote an (almost finished) article with my friend and colleague, Dr. Brooke Kandel-Cisco<\/li>\n<li>Visited Stockholm, Sweden<\/li>\n<li>Visited Copenhagen, Denmark<\/li>\n<li>Visited Reykjavic, Iceland<\/li>\n<li>Rode a bike (without crashing) in Copenhagen<\/li>\n<li>Ate herring&#8211;multiple times<\/li>\n<li>Listened to newly arrived students in Vallentuna tell their stories of arrival in Sweden<\/li>\n<li>Had wine and cheese in the lovely home of my Swedish Hoosier colleague, Angelica Granqvist<\/li>\n<li>Got to know my Butler colleagues better by traveling with them for 14 days<\/li>\n<li>Soaked in the Blue Lagoon with a silica mud mask on my face and a drink in my hand<\/li>\n<li>Ate a salmon burger off a salmon wagon<\/li>\n<li>Tried Thai food for the first time<\/li>\n<li>Walked through Kronsborg Castle which is the setting for Hamlet<\/li>\n<li>Saw the &#8220;real&#8221;
