{"id":3838,"date":"2020-04-26T20:08:33","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T01:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/?p=3838"},"modified":"2020-04-26T20:08:33","modified_gmt":"2020-04-27T01:08:33","slug":"butler-soccer-players-life-in-spain-during-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/2020\/04\/26\/butler-soccer-players-life-in-spain-during-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Butler Soccer Player&#8217;s Life in Spain During COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When COVID-19 started spreading across the United States, most Butler students quickly headed home to be with their families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, for other Butler students, such as sophomore men\u2019s soccer goalie Gabriel Gjergji, traveling home was not as simple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy first flight home was canceled because of &#8216;presidential restrictions&#8217;, then I tried a second time with another airline and it worked,\u201d Gjergji said. \u201cThe plane was almost empty, there were only about five people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gjergji is one of the many international athletes who was recruited to come to Butler. He is originally from Vizenza, Italy, but now resides in Benidorm, Spain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gjergji was one of the lucky ones who quickly booked his flight home after learning that classes would move online for the remainder of the semester. Other international athletes, such as his roommate from Nottingham, England have been living in the dorms alone since Spring Break.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this spring, the men\u2019s soccer team was supposed to have games against IUPUI, Notre Dame and Xavier, however all three were cancelled because of COVID-19. Despite the cancellations, both Gjergji and the athletes stuck on Butler\u2019s campus have been focusing on staying in shape for their seasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m trying to eat as healthy as possible and work out twice a day,\u201d Gjergji said. \u201cThe fitness coach sends us drills and exercises to do everyday, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B-vEuIJpV6V\/\">I complete in the morning<\/a> and then I lift with my uncle at nights to do some extra.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/files\/2020\/04\/IMG_7975.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3839\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/files\/2020\/04\/IMG_7975-300x294.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/files\/2020\/04\/IMG_7975-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/files\/2020\/04\/IMG_7975-1024x1003.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/files\/2020\/04\/IMG_7975-768x752.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/files\/2020\/04\/IMG_7975-429x420.jpg 429w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/files\/2020\/04\/IMG_7975-640x627.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/files\/2020\/04\/IMG_7975-681x667.jpg 681w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/butler360\/files\/2020\/04\/IMG_7975.jpg 1241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gjergji is planning on returning to Indianapolis this summer to practice with Indy11, the local professional team.
