After visiting Italy years ago, Shelley says, she was so taken with the Reggio approach that she persuaded her faculty colleagues and PK-12 partners to study it together as a learning community and decide how to move forward together. As the resulting Indianapolis Reggio Collaborative worked to build awareness of the model around the state, Shelley incorporated the project-based model in her own teaching, but she had to wait years before the right opportunity arose for setting up the lab school. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;color: #13294b\">Before that happened, Shelley\u2019s Reggio course work inspired\u00a0Connie Sherman, executive director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/emclick.imodules.com\/wf\/click?upn=-2BVJw7GizUky-2FAkNGADT1aOnESBenq2yvG38I27GpXT38dANQnWR2QLpvO626G6ui1B1Bcdh1Egh1GSgz1L0L0ApEj3eIoEA5paymwGRPsm4-3D_Pn9sCBN2wsU3Za3yAkBz8RWyuUMBYV-2F6n-2FZ5DnCc0x7bkn7CbuN1HdHMvHTshQedAO7rqyTbmhWVxnqD3-2BFIxE0UkBUP-2BkqE-2FCymNPejI3AhzrGDSNV4N5sS0GtroRZm3ESDbWMqcLaa4GeAx8YMHj9uYt52JVCM2Y1f6-2BjfFfEAgHEuhNNWyYedFhiId-2B-2BHnjkbEN9q-2F2JpJBtf5gRE80eZHVFSdZc8c5dNWT4xS3Z1OFk0R5ShE-2F-2B2cmL-2FFggOkyFhIolBgaYFZyoYyPJUOBCO-2FM69eDiCb7mhqGf-2BnHSzEqAxQ7CBRvqfLx4I4DYazw-2Fi2PYZ0FnihBjH6i3xC5ySjtsQ6dLB4XVLxsh3lDvS0xY8mE2pMAHeSWEVv2T15F-2BaKiKZ-2B3bPcrqOPS3r5MBG7ufrkW-2BNA1D5n-2BE4GxVEKniy4CIxc1oECwOLC7XhlrE2kaqDTMI7b0tP3kK5QoLex-2BHcjTI9dVNUJk0RI2c-3D\"><span style=\"color: #e31c79;text-decoration: none\">St. Mary\u2019s Child Center<\/span><\/a>, to redesign the center\u2019s programs around the philosophy. Eventually her preschool would have a site at the IPS\/Butler Lab School, a partnership that Sherman describes as \u201ca pretty remarkable relationship.\u201d Not only do the student teachers become valuable members of the instructional team, she says, but they develop into such effective educators that St. Mary\u2019s tries to keep them from leaving by hiring them whenever possible. <a href=\"http:\/\/emclick.imodules.com\/wf\/click?upn=-2BVJw7GizUky-2FAkNGADT1aOnESBenq2yvG38I27GpXT38dANQnWR2QLpvO626G6ui1B1Bcdh1Egh1GSgz1L0L0GPz27gK6a6VctyESytwuF0-3D_Pn9sCBN2wsU3Za3yAkBz8RWyuUMBYV-2F6n-2FZ5DnCc0x7bkn7CbuN1HdHMvHTshQedAO7rqyTbmhWVxnqD3-2BFIxE0UkBUP-2BkqE-2FCymNPejI3AhzrGDSNV4N5sS0GtroRZm3ESDbWMqcLaa4GeAx8YMHj9uYt52JVCM2Y1f6-2BjfFfEAgHEuhNNWyYedFhiId-2B-2BHnjkbEN9q-2F2JpJBtf5gRE80eZHVFSdZc8c5dNWT4xS3Z1OFk0R5ShE-2F-2B2cmL-2FFggOkyFhIolBgaYFZyoYyPJUOBCO-2FM69eDiCb7mhqGf-2BnHSzEqAxQ7CBRvqfLx4I4DYaHkuBw10M0xdQ8tqWKChm2RGp0zAFwvlCeK4cSm2CX-2B6-2Fo8ZgRwHFeku553URcG3SV9ogSmxKtNSL9tTTVLUh7WW-2BHGS-2FnEsAcHyMvK4IsIEeT-2Fs1Hi3eANrmVj2EnJypeWUhEvH4wmHZADaJjfvdF8OrOPilcDG24Dupt5gQU-2Fo-3D\"><span style=\"color: #e31c79;text-decoration: none\">Shortridge High School<\/span><\/a>, an IB World School, is one of the College of Education\u2019s longer-standing clinical partners in IPS. Master Practitioner\u00a0Flo Barnes, who serves as a liaison in the Shortridge-Butler partnership, says teacher candidates not only provide a valuable second adult in the room but also ask questions that inspire their mentor teachers to remember and reconnect with their values. Professor\u00a0Shelly Furuness\u00a0explains that Butler\u2019s mission is to \u201cprepare candidates for schools as they should be,\u201d and it\u2019s powerful for mentor teachers to work next to these enthusiastic, optimistic preservice teachers. Shortridge science teacher\u00a0Abby Solstis\u00a0notes that one of the many benefits her high school students get from the partnership is that they work harder on presentations for the \u201coutsiders\u201d from Butler. What\u2019s more, she says, \u201cThe students benefit a lot from just interacting with college students.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;color: #13294b\">Greg Nolan\u00a0of IPS describes the deep student-driven learning that the Reggio \u201cworkshop\u201d teaching method enables as well as the benefit of going to school in a PK-12 continuum that partners with a high-quality postsecondary institution. \u201cAt such a young age, to be able to interact with folks who are coaching you [\u2026] especially around what you\u2019re going to do when you leave high school, how you view the world, your citizenship, how you approach learning in general for yourself\u2014that\u2019s invaluable.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;color: #13294b\">Asked for advice to others looking to develop a similar clinical partnership, Shortridge Principal\u00a0Shane O\u2019Day\u00a0emphasizes the importance of constant communication to ease the pain of change and build trust around mutual ground for moving a partnership forward. \u201cAnd that\u2019s a little scary, because oftentimes our schools have been isolated in silos; our universities have been in silos.
