{"id":363,"date":"2013-12-06T14:46:04","date_gmt":"2013-12-06T19:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/coe\/?p=363"},"modified":"2013-12-06T14:46:34","modified_gmt":"2013-12-06T19:46:34","slug":"transforming-education-december-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/coe\/2013\/12\/06\/transforming-education-december-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Transforming Education-December 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Palatino Linotype','serif'\">It\u2019s Time to <\/span><\/strong><em><b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Palatino Linotype','serif'\">Start <\/span><\/b><\/em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Palatino Linotype','serif'\">Acting like Children<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/coe\/files\/2013\/02\/Ena-Shelley12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-179 alignright\" alt=\"Ena-Shelley12\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/coe\/files\/2013\/02\/Ena-Shelley12.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/strong><b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: 'Palatino Linotype','serif'\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Palatino Linotype','serif'\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Palatino Linotype','serif';color: #003366\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Have you noticed that during times of political turmoil, a common chastising comment to leaders on both sides of the aisle to \u201cStop acting like children!\u201d?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"> What an insult to our children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"> In fact, rather than framing the behavior as childish, the critics should perhaps encourage those leaders to be more like kids because <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype','serif'\">children understand what matters.<\/span><\/strong><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <span style=\"background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% white\">In past columns I have cited the wisdom of many thoughtful grown-ups: Margaret Wheatley, Daniel Pink, and Maya Angelou, to name a few. Yet today my inspiration comes from the voice of a child\u2014a child who really\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype','serif'\"> understood what matters.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"background: white\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mattie Stepanek was a young poet whose life was cut short by a rare form of muscular dystrophy, yet his voice reflects on what really matters better than that of most adults.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Things That Matter<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>By Mattie Stepanek<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It matters that the world knows<br \/>\nWe must celebrate the gift of life<br \/>\nEvery day in some way, and<br \/>\nWe must always remember<br \/>\nTo play after every storm.<\/p>\n<p>It matters that the world knows<br \/>\nAll children are truly blessed<br \/>\nWith the innocent gifts of gentleness,<br \/>\nTrust, and compassion, which<br \/>\nShould guide the wisdom of grown-ups.<\/p>\n<p>It matters that the world knows<br \/>\nWe each have a song in our heart<br \/>\nThat can inspire us in good times and<br \/>\nHard times if we take the time to listen.<\/p>\n<p>It matters that the world knows<br \/>\nOur senses can help us discover<br \/>\nThe hidden and non-hidden<br \/>\nEnchantment in life, if we use them fully.<\/p>\n<p>It matters that the world knows<br \/>\nWe must choose our words and wants<br \/>\nCarefully or we could forever hurt others<br \/>\nWith these most dangerous weapons.<\/p>\n<p>It matters that the world knows<br \/>\nStrength and value of all things created<br \/>\nMust be measured by character and commitment<br \/>\nRather than by might and wealth.<\/p>\n<p>It matters that the world knows<br \/>\nWe must heed the valuable lessons of<br \/>\nEveryday life, through the celebration of<br \/>\nChildren and Heartsongs, senses and words,<br \/>\nOr we could lose in our journey to the future.<\/p>\n<p>It matters that the world knows<br \/>\nA person by my name and being existed<br \/>\nWith a strong spirit and an eternal mindset<br \/>\nTo become a peacemaker for all,<br \/>\nBy sharing the things that really matter.<br \/>\nIf you have ever seen a group of children sitting on the floor in a circle, and they see another child come in, think about what they do. They widen the circle and include the child, not after questioning her political perspective, motive, or agenda, but rather without hesitation. They scoot back and invite them into the conversation. You see, they understand that <strong>what matters is you can only get to know someone once they have been invited into the circle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, I encourage our leaders, I encourage you, to widen your circle and invite someone into the conversation that may or may not have the same view as you on any number of issues. For it is only when we begin to have true conversation, without preconceived agendas, that problems can be solved.<\/p>\n<p>Children aspire to be grown-ups, yet look around. Are some of our most visible grown-ups really modeling what we want children to be?
