After talking with a few different people, I found out that<br \/>\nthere are different ideas of the phones, and that I was totally<br \/>\nclueless about them. So, thanks to Heather, I now have an official<br \/>\ndiagnosis of the public phone situation.<\/p>\n<p>The pay phones downstairs don&#8217;t work. They haven&#8217;t for about a year. I<br \/>\ntried them myself today and all I got was a buzzing sound but no dial<br \/>\ntone. They are supposed to have been removed from their prime real<br \/>\nestate on the walls downstairs, but that major construction project is<br \/>\nstill pending.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to these nonfunctional monoliths of telecommunications,<br \/>\nthere is also one &#8220;campus phone&#8221; downstairs in one of the booths. I<br \/>\ntried it this morning and was able not only to get a dial tone and call<br \/>\nother phones on campus, but pushing 7 first did indeed get me an<br \/>\nexternal line with which I was able to call someone off campus.<\/p>\n<p><b>Summary:<\/b> The payphones don&#8217;t work, but the campus phone does, and can even call off campus.<\/p>\n<p>(Sure, I could have said that right at the beginning, but it wouldn&#8217;t have been as interesting, would it? have?)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lately there have been some questions about the public pay phones downstairs in the basement (or &#8220;concourse level&#8221;, if you prefer).
