{"id":1417,"date":"2005-08-17T03:47:00","date_gmt":"2005-08-17T03:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/2005\/08\/virus-checking\/"},"modified":"2005-08-17T03:47:00","modified_gmt":"2005-08-17T03:47:00","slug":"virus-checking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/2005\/08\/virus-checking\/","title":{"rendered":"Virus Checking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may have heard that there&#8217;s a new computer worm (virus) going<br \/>\naround and that we&#8217;ve been encouraged to double-check our virus<br \/>\ndetection programs and make sure we have the latest virus definitions.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a good thing to do anyway, so here is a review of steps you should<br \/>\ntake to make sure you&#8217;re as thoroughly protected from viruses as<br \/>\npossible. These directions are for Butler-issued computers but will be<br \/>\nsimilar for other computers, depending on what virus protection<br \/>\nsoftware you have.<\/p>\n<p>(<span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Note:<\/span> <a HREF=\"\/ir\/Documentation\/security.html\">Information Resources<\/a><br \/>\nhas an excellent page with lots of information and directions,<br \/>\nincluding how students can download Symantec AntiVirus from My.Butler.)<\/p>\n<p>There are two primary tasks you need to do. One is keeping your virus<br \/>\ndefinitions current (so the computer knows what to look for), and the<br \/>\nother is actually scanning the computer&#8217;s hard drive.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">To update your virus definitions:<\/span><br \/>\nRun your Symantec Anti-Virus program (Start&#8211;Programs&#8211;Symantec Client<br \/>\nSecurity&#8211;Symantec AntiVirus Client). Click the LiveUpdate button to<br \/>\nget the updates right now. To schedule regular updating <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">(highly recommended)<\/span>,<br \/>\nclick File&#8211;Schedule Updates. Check the box to enable automatic updates<br \/>\nand select a time that your computer will be on and logged in.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">To scan for viruses:<\/span> Run your<br \/>\nSymantec Anti-Virus program (Start&#8211;Programs&#8211;Symantec Client<br \/>\nSecurity&#8211;Symantec AntiVirus Client). Click Scan Computer, check the<br \/>\nbox next to &#8220;C: Local Disk&#8221; and click the Scan button to scan right<br \/>\nnow. To schedule regular scanning <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">(highly recommended)<\/span>,<br \/>\nclick Scheduled Scans, then New Scheduled Scan. Click Next, then set a<br \/>\ntime and frequency (daily is best, but weekly is okay) that you&#8217;ll be<br \/>\nlogged onto the computer, but preferably when you&#8217;ll be away from it.<br \/>\nLunchtime is good, or if you have a regular class or meeting. Click<br \/>\nNext and check the box next to &#8220;C: Local Disk&#8221; and then click the Save<br \/>\nbutton.
