{"id":2272,"date":"2013-01-29T15:00:13","date_gmt":"2013-01-29T20:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/?p=2272"},"modified":"2013-01-29T15:02:48","modified_gmt":"2013-01-29T20:02:48","slug":"bu-founders-day-event-in-irwin-library-feb-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/2013\/01\/bu-founders-day-event-in-irwin-library-feb-7\/","title":{"rendered":"BU Founder&#8217;s Day event in Irwin Library, Feb. 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Butler University\u2019s Founder\u2019s Day festivities on Feb. 7 will include the unveiling of an archival pigmented print of LINCOLN 200 YEARS, the Abraham Lincoln portrait that hangs in the History Department.<\/p>\n<p>The unveiling ceremony will take place from <strong>12:15-12:45 p.m.<\/strong> in the <strong>Irwin Library<\/strong>. It is open to the Butler community.<\/p>\n<p>The event will include remarks by Greg Silver, who donated the original painting in honor of his father, David Silver \u201837, a longtime Butler University professor of history and government, and Melina Fox, the niece five generations removed of Butler University founder Ovid Butler.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana artist James Wille Faust, who painted LINCOLN 200 YEARS in 2010, also will be on hand, and there will be a cake to celebrate the anniversary of Ovid Butler\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Greg Silver commissioned Faust to paint a portrait of Lincoln because of the similarities between Ovid Butler and the 16<sup>th<\/sup> president.<\/p>\n<p>-Both were well known as abolitionists \u2013 Butler at the state level and Lincoln at the national levei.<\/p>\n<p>-Both were born into families whose religion believed in abolition.<\/p>\n<p>-Both were lawyers, and both came from families that moved to Indiana within a year of each other (Lincoln in 1816, Butler in 1817).<\/p>\n<p>Silver presented LINCOLN 200 YEARS to Butler University on Sept. 23, 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The archival pigmented print\u2014a high-quality computer print used for fine arts printing\u2014will hang in the Irwin Library.
