{"id":284,"date":"2010-11-08T12:13:51","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T17:13:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/?p=284"},"modified":"2010-11-12T13:23:33","modified_gmt":"2010-11-12T18:23:33","slug":"waters-project-samuel-barber-lecture-recital-at-irwin-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/dawgblog\/2010\/11\/waters-project-samuel-barber-lecture-recital-at-irwin-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Waters Project: Samuel Barber Lecture-Recital at Irwin Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Butler students, faculty, staff, and the Indianapolis community are invited to attend:  The Sea Is Calm Tonight: A Centennial Celebration of the Music of Samuel Barber, a lecture-recital which will be presented on the main floor of Irwin Library in the \u201cCollaborative Learning Spaces\u201d (southwest) quadrant at 5:00 PM this coming Sunday, November 14th.  This lecture-recital is a sponsored program of Provost Comstock\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butler.edu\/provost\/faculty-development\/waters-project-2010-11\" target=\"_blank\">Waters Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The program will include performances of Barber\u2019s Dover Beach and Adagio for Strings presented by Dr. Kyle Ferrill, Visiting Assistant Professor of Voice, and four Jordan College of Fine Arts School of Music students:\u00a0 Carla Black, Mary Webber, David Platt, and Katie Burns.\u00a0 Dr. Wayne Wentzel, JCFA Professor Emeritus and author of <em>Samuel Barber: A Guide to Research<\/em> (Routledge) and <em>The Adagio of Samuel Barber<\/em> (in preparation for Pendragon Press), will provide background information on Barber and give a brief talk about his new book on Barber\u2019s Adagio. \u00a0 Sheridan Stormes, Butler Libraries Performing and Fine Arts Librarian,\u00a0will open the program by reading and briefly reflecting on two poems:\u00a0 \u201cDover Beach\u201d by Matthew Arnold and \u201cThe Wave\u201d (taken from Virgil\u2019s <em>Georgics<\/em> and translated) by Robert Pinsky.<\/p>\n<p>A reception during which conversations can continue about Barber, Dover Beach, and The Adagio will immediately follow the lecture and performances in the \u201cCollaborative Learning Spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Butler students, faculty, staff, and the Indianapolis community are invited to attend: The Sea Is Calm Tonight: A Centennial Celebration of the Music of Samuel Barber, a lecture-recital which will be presented on the main floor of Irwin Library in the \u201cCollaborative Learning Spaces\u201d (southwest) quadrant at 5:00 PM this coming Sunday, November 14th.
