Wikipedia\" width=\"297\" height=\"223\" data-noaft=\"1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In their earliest days, early American schools faced this burden by providing a classical education reflecting the social and economic demands of the times with instruction stressing philosophy, reading, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">writing, penmanship, arithmetic, and languages, especially French<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0 The young men and women who were fortunate enough to be permitted to attend schools for the first century of our nation\u2019s history were generally equipped for civic engagement as well as the demands of a \u201cvirtuous\u201d life.[1]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following the industrial revolution, however, the prerogatives of 20th century educators had shifted to a model that more closely resembles our contemporary classrooms.\u00a0 Curriculum, delivery, and standardization represented a compromise between \u201cpublic educators, industrial trainers, and old humanists\u201d preparing for diverse needs in a newly industrialized North, but driving toward a society that is comprised of \u201can instructed and intelligent people\u2026[who] are always more decent and orderly than an ignorant and stupid one\u201d.[2][3]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-266\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/futurefocused\/files\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-11.13.40-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1108\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/futurefocused\/files\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-11.13.40-PM.png 1108w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/futurefocused\/files\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-11.13.40-PM-300x50.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/futurefocused\/files\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-11.13.40-PM-1024x172.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/futurefocused\/files\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-23-at-11.13.40-PM-768x129.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1108px) 100vw, 1108px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As our education system faces the prospect of undoing the trauma of a global pandemic, restoring civil discourse within our communities regarding the role of government in the lives of its constituents, and preparing workers to add value during a new industrial revolution brought about by the proliferation of robotics, advanced computers, and artificial intelligence, we would like to provoke conversation about what a new paradigm of learning and leading in the coming years might entail.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"n3VNCb alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.abcotvs.com\/dip\/images\/6367697_kids-mask.jpg?w=1600\" alt=\"COVID 19: Tips to get kids comfortable wearing masks as school reopens - It is full of many challenges and it is important for kids {and adults} to be able to handle these challenges in order to learn, grow, and solve problems. If we don\u2019t persevere, we stand still. And if we aren\u2019t resilient we are stressed, defeated, and argumentative when faced with every obstacle that comes along.\u201d [4]<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Further, the proximate skills of reflection, empathy, cooperation, and communication appear relevant to the long-term economic and social interests of our nation as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-250 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/futurefocused\/files\/2021\/06\/communicate-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/futurefocused\/files\/2021\/06\/communicate-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/futurefocused\/files\/2021\/06\/communicate-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/futurefocused\/files\/2021\/06\/communicate.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Communication is front and center for what we need to do in order to educate our students to be ready for the workforce. There are several other factors such as compassion, empathy, and ethics, but communication needs to be front and center.[5]<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cInterpersonal skills: Include content that focuses on interpersonal emotional intelligence, including empathy, cooperation, negotiation, leadership and social awareness. Horn suggests that considering individuality to paves a clear path to reinforcing the collective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-404\"
