As we circled back to Daoism this week and after discussing the excerpts from Chuang Tzu in class, I found it interesting that Tzu recognized that we have both a limited lifespan, but also that knowledge is not limited and people can continue learning throughout their lifetime. However, because we have limited minds and lives, there could be a danger in pursuing what does not have a limit and there could be risks involved with this. This seems to be something that is continually emphasized in Daoism and it goes beyond what we can comprehend and more to life than we can understand. I also thought the section that talked about finding ways of accomplishing the same thing by different means, which used the imagery of water and its wearing away at the stone in a way that doesn’t seem effortful, was a very thought-provoking concept. I also like the emphasis Daoism places on thriving, health, etc., and the kind of lifestyle or different path this may set us on because of valuing things differently. I think it is important to consider this element of Daoist tradition and possibly not taking a certain path because it could impact our health and wellbeing negatively long term, especially in our American culture that is always on the go and where people placing a lot of their identity in their successes in life.
