Alive Part 1

I thought that the story “Alive” was one of the most interesting pieces we read for this week. Something that stuck out to me was a rule the author mentioned after the earthquake, “all citizens must abide by the law and help one another. Any looter caught will be executed on the spot.” I thought that this was an interesting statement, and speaks to the values of the culture. It’s not just socially acceptable for citizens to help one another in the aftermath of the disaster, it is completely expected of them, and those taking advantage of the situation can even be punished by death. This made me think about how America would compare in the aftermath of a disaster. While there are many people who would help with medical care, cleanup, etc., I don’t think there would necessarily be the same kind of “expectation.” I think this shows that our society should place more emphasis on our relationships with others and humanity in general.
