Cairo House 1-26

I thought the reading for today was interesting, especially when it comes to gender roles. The main character was not allowed to see the animals slaughtered or observe the ritual. She couldn’t even ask her mother to do so, because she knew she would say no, and going against that advice would have been more offensive. This made me think of how the culture really values respecting parents. A lot of my own friends would have thought about going against their parents’ wishes in order to see the ritual if they really wanted to.

To me, the biggest lesson from this reading is how restrictions can sometimes do more harm than good. Regardless of whether she was allowed to or not, Gigi ended up watching the ritual and hurting herself in the process. If she was going to watch it at all, she might as well have watched it safely.
