Boston Celtics player takes on Chinese Government on treatment of Uighurs

Recently, outspoken critic of Authoritarian regimes like that in Turkey, Enes Kanter has gone to social media to go after the Chinese government for what he is calling forced labor in genocide in the Chinese Region of Xingjaing where their Muslim minority live.  He has called for people to boycott playing there, stop jersey sales made from China, and for more players to speak out on the issue. Kanter has a past of going after regime he sees as Authoritarian. In 2016 he was banned from the country of Turkey and wanted for his critique of the Turkish president. Kanter has said on Twitter that he will be releasing custom shoes that enshrine Uighur culture and will continue to work to represent them on all of his platforms. The Chinese government has responded by banning Boston Celtics game being aired in the country and has suspended any broadcast of past replays and highlights for their sports networks. This does put ESPN in a tricky spot as they do rely on the Chinese markets to grow their brand and ESPN’s parent company of Disney heavily relies on China for their movies and merchandise sales. NBA will not suspend him or take a side on this but in the background many are probably nervous with the continued critique. Although Kanter is no longer a starter on his new team, his voice has given hope to many that more players will step up and say something.
