ICR Reflection – Chinese Lion Dance

During this meeting for the IACA ICR, we were introduced to the Chinese Lion Dance by Kwan and Benny. We went over a history of the lion dance and got to see how many other countries have mirrored and adapted the lion dance to their culture. We then got to put on the costume and try-out the lion dance.

During this experience I learned that the Chinese Lion is a symbol of good luck and that is why it is typically at many events and parades. We got to see many examples of the costume across many locations in China and even other countries that have a similar costume. After watching videos of the lion dance, it can be concluded that is is a true art from. Some performances seemed to be very acrobatic and the individuals would jump from elevated platform to platform, while others were more feminine and elegant. I was a bit uncomfortable to perform the dance just because it was new to me. The costume was actually very cool. It was a good experience to learn more about this lion dance that I have seen in movies and shows and never knew the meaning of.

This experience took place at the Indiana Association of Chinese Americans which was very eye opening to see what they are working on. They have set up many museum spaces and have plans to expand very soon. This is eye opening to see what is stirring within the community. It also showed ways of volunteering within the community.
