During this meeting of our IACA ICR we got to experience a session of martial arts training. We met at Ling’s Oriental Martial Arts and got to meet Master Ling. We began the evening by doing a short run followed by supplemental exercises such as jumping jacks, pushups, and sit-ups. This got us warmed up and then we started to learn some interesting pressure points that are effective in defending yourself. This was very interesting because I was not aware of how much these would hurt, and Master Ling made sure that we all were used as an example for the class. Next, we learned how to perform a throw, and this was quite fun to learn. Lastly, we learned our first form called Long Fist. This was very involved and tiring, but very interesting. Lastly, we got to watch Master Ling perform a form involving a fan and one involving a sword.
During this meeting of ICR I learned about how martial arts is truly an art form that I was not entirely aware of. This is a very beneficial hobby that can keep people in shape and can be treated as a form of meditation for those who need it. The idea of training to better yourself and even compare yourself to another person through a fight or a match is very beneficial for the mind to ensure you have something to drive for. These martial arts are also keeping traditions of ancient China alive.
This event helped me to understand a hobby that many individuals treat as a major part of their lives. This is a window into ancient China and the expression of one’s ability to protect. This experience has made me interested in practicing martial arts.
