Cairo House Chapter 10

The beginning of this chapter presents an interesting issue considering refugees. The author talks about how he is returning to Iran and encounters an airport agent who is the same age when he arrives. There is a moment of awkwardness when the agent asks what his point of origin is, to which he replies “America.” He then asks the required question “where have you been?” The author says that the agent asks him this question in an accusatory tone. This shows how big of a difference there can be between two people who should be relatively similar. The author’s choice to spend time in America created an entirely different pathway for his life as opposed to someone of the same age, from the same place, and with similar traits than those who did not leave. Their experiences are vastly different.

  1. I believe this difference is present in culture as well. For one of the articles we were required to read, it talks about the experiences that people who practice Islam in Western Culture must deal with. As culture in Islamic nations differ from the US, I believe that although sharing a religion, the experiences that both have encountered differ greatly, and might be the source of that tension.
