Reflecting on IACA 12/4

Today we went to Newfields to look at Asian art. There was a lot to cover, and we started on the first floor with European and American art which allowed something to compare to in terms of style and how much history is there. The sculptures and many statues in the Asia section were all so old, there was no way to identify the artist. There was also more pottery and stone art and physical things in the Asia section compared to the Europe and America sections which had a majority paintings and some statues. I think there are normally more Asian painting, but the section in under renovation.

Sculptures in the Asia section were mostly animals and practical things, whereas in Europe and America there were a lot of statues of women or prominent figures. I think this also speaks to the history of Asia and how much of what was in the museum were things used for survival, and the things elsewhere were for decoration.
