This story is simply a great representation of the marriage culture in China. Parents are in charge of finding their daughters a husband who is rich and can take care of them. We see in this story the girl’s mom does not like the boy… until he becomes rich. Suddenly the mom loves him and so does the girl. If I was the boy I would take offense to this because clearly they only want him for his money. Looking at it from the cultural perspective they know nothing else, this is how it is supposed to be in China. However, compared to the United States this is not what we tend to look for in a husband and if you do this you are called a “gold digger” meaning you just want to marry someone for their money.
