China is the third largest country.\u00a0 A country that large has a wide range of geography that leads to its culture, economy, and history. \u00a0China is made up of 23 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct controlled municipalities, and two special administrative regions.\u00a0 Beijing is the capital and Shanghai is the largest city, both are direct controlled municipalities.\u00a0 Macau and Hong Kong are the two special administrative regions.\u00a0 Mandarin is the official Chinese language dialect, but there are many regional dialects.\u00a0 China also only has one time zone.<\/p>\n
In the north, China has two deserts, the Gobi and Taklamakan.\u00a0 The Taklamakan is in the northwest and the smaller of the two.\u00a0 The Gobi Desert is in the north along China\u2019s border with Mongolia.\u00a0 The Gobi Desert is high in elevation which causes low temperatures.\u00a0 In the southeast China has subtropical forests.\u00a0 In the south, China is separated from south Asia by mountain ranges, notably the Himalayas.\u00a0 China is also home to the third and sixth largest rivers in the world.\u00a0 The Yangtze and Yellow rivers flow from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated east.\u00a0 These rivers have historically been major routes for trade and cultural spread.\u00a0 China has no major geographic obstacles in the west, allowing for major trade routes such as the Silk Road.<\/p>\n
